    Smart Cages? Inhanced Vision!

Roland Piquepaille writes "There are many systems designed to help car drivers and to improve safety. In this article, New Scientist focuses on a system developed by the National ICT Australia lab (NICTA). This new driver assistance system uses three cameras, one to look at road signs ahead and two to check what the driver is looking at. The images are transmitted to a computer which decodes the road signs and the driver's reactions to them. If you're driving above speed limits, you will be alerted. Same thing if you're about to pass a stop sign without reducing speed. You still can choose to ignore the warnings, but if you're caught speeding, you'll have to tell the officer why you refused to slow down. This system is currently being tested and appears to perform well especially in poor lighting conditions. Read more for other references about similar helping systems and to see how the road signs are analyzed."

Life is difficult because it is non-linear.

    Hehe

"Michael, you have just passed from a 100 zone into a 50 zone, and not reduced your speed"

"Michael, you have just run over a motorbike, and not reduced your speed"

Hehe, I'd buy the revised model, with an EARLY warning system

PS: Michael reference is from knight rider, if anyone was in any doubt

Bike magazine has an article on how the rush to achieve 5 star NCAP crash ratings has resulted in worsening visibility for drivers due to the design of A pillars to meet these tests. The last research on driver sight lines was last done in 1963 and even then it found that poor pillar design can obscure a bike on roundabout approaches right up till impact.
So, the buggers really don't see us.
    A bit bloody scary really.
