I'm worried that cops with Tazers will get fatter and lazier. Goodness knows some of them have far too many donuts as it is.

A very good thing that they were not armed with a Glock!
Ah, they didn't actually 'shoot' themselves with the Tazer, it had already been fire - just another media screw-up thing.

But they did give themselves a shock

    Latest figure is $90,000 p.a.

I have to disagree with ya there. Look at the circumference of Chief Wiggum and he dosen't carry a tazer!

Its all fun in games until a motorcyclist is shot off a bike.
Nah im all keen for the whole force to have tazers.
Better that than a live firearm i say.
Pepper spray and bag cannons i think are also good deterents.

There was an incident a couple of weekends ago in Auckland (Khyber Pass Road, BP gas station) where a mate's son was carved up pretty good and his mate got worse. Twenty nutters went beserk on a bus with broken bottles and beat the crap out of some other kids, my mate's son put his hand up to cover his face and got slashed in the hand, the wound went from the webbing between his pinky and ring finger right down to the palm. He also got stitches in his head from another blow with a broken bottle. His mate had to be resuss'd in hospital with an exposed spinal cord!

The nutters wrecked the bus and there were teens bleeding all over the forecourt etc.

According to information I have there was an off-duty cop on the bus who determined that the situation was too violent to take direct action, personal safety etc etc. He dialled up the troops who (to their credit) came out of the woodwork very quickly. I wonder; if he'd had a tazer in his back pocket if that would have deterred twenty (probably P-fuelled) nutters. At a time like that maybe a gun would be a good thing. (??)

The cops towed the bus as it is a 'crime scene'.

    Anyone hear about that incident?

Carbon fibre is a totally different material
Kevlar is a synthetic material known as a polymer. A polymer is a chain made of many similar molecular groups, known as monomers, that are bonded together. In the case of Kevlar, it is a carbon polymer in a fibre. Not all carbon fibres are graphite, kevlar is simply one type of carbon fibre. Each Kevlar segment or monomer is a chemical unit C14H10N2O2, with the carbon atoms forming two linked carbon rings. It is a P type carrier.

From the Reference Book for Composites Technology By Stuart M. Lee

Dielectric strength parrallel with warp 3.3 kv/cm
Dielectric strength perpendicular to warp 3.7 kv/cm
    Arc resistance 125

What this means is that Kevlar is an insulator at low voltages, but breaks down to become a good conductor at higher voltages. The Tazer at 50KV would have to have the barbs at least 13 cm apart in order to prevent electrical conductance.

OK, back on topic - IMO the cops should all be issued with tasers and fully trained in their use. I see them as being the best way of instantly incapacitationg a violent suspect without any permanent harm.

These guidlines are there to protect you and I.........the public, and that includes the kaftan liberals also, not that many are wearing them in this 'enlightened' age.

I have not read this entire thread yet, but I will. Has anyone seen someone psychotic on P? I have and I have also seen one scrawny male thrown off 6 very large Police officers with attitude. Now I do not know about anyone else, but as far as I'm concerned the Police should be allowed to keep themselves as safe as possible. If this means someone gets tazered or even at times shot, so be it. It is the individual's choice to do drugs and/or break the law. There is far too much crime in New Zealand and on one hand society says made the penalties harder, but with the other, say make the Police softer? That would never work and would just end up promoting crime, much like the wet bus tickets handed out by the NZ justice system do. People are too concerned with personal rights. I think if you decide to break the law, your waver those rights. Also, if you give the Police serious attitude, they should tazer yer arse...

Edit:Have read the entire thread now. Stand by what I said 100%.

A friend of mine who is a cop, pepper sprayed a 6" foot, 130 kg nutter on 'P', after he'd done a runner from a car crash on Dyers Pass Road in CH-CH. It still took him and another cop 3 to 4 minutes just to get the handcuffs on this savage in the back of a police car. My mate was saying his colleagues made the comment that a tazer would have been handy. It's not like the good old days where you put your dukes up and have fisticuffs anymore. Look at that other savage Bell who killed 3 people, he was on 'P'. Shoot them all I say!

True!! Fall to the ground nowadays, and that is the signal for one sack of shite to commence putting in the slipper!!!! Used to be, fall down = game over. Survival of the dirtiest is the rule of thumb now...
