VT/Z 250 Air filter

Hi people! This is my first post!

Anyway to the point, I am wanting to buy a new air filter for my 1989 VTZ250. I've been to Botany Honda but they say that the VTZ air filter is no longer available, however they are still currently trying to find one that might fit.

I believe the engine is the same as the old VTRs and VTs so Im guessing the filter could be the same as well? So, just wondering if anyone here that has owned any of these bikes has ever bought a new air filter and where you got it from?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Check another dealer to be sure - a 1989 bike sounds way too new to have a common maintenance item NLA.
In fact It's unheard of.
If Honda has in fact done the dirty you probably can find something that will do, I have that problem with my Bimota but I found a BMW one that does the trick.

Is it a flat paper element type?

Ring up Econohonda on (07) 884 8810, they have heaps of NOS (new old stock) parts. I'd be very surprised if they didn't have an air filter for you, or at the very least get you one that would fit.

They're down in Te Aroha, but it will be on your doorstep within a couple of days.

Yep, it is the paper airfilter type. Also, it has the code HMKVO-AF on it.

I gave Econohonda a call and they guy there was very helpful but unfortunately they didnt have one it stock. Howeve, they could ship it from overseas to me for a total of $110.

Botany Honda gave me a call back and said that they could make a new filter for me for $70 but I think I would rather buy a genuine one.

There is also this UK website, David Silver Spares, that I came across and the price there seems very good. They only have the VT250FD listed but it should be the same, I've given them an email to check. The total should come up to around $60-70 including shipping plus stuff from the UK usually gets here pretty quick. So far this looks like a pretty good option.

David Silver have quite a good reputation around here, shipping is very fast from them considering it comes from the UK.

Well I was pretty busy with uni last week so I wasnt really able to do to much about the filter but I think I might have it sorted now.

It turns out the VT250FD is different but the VTR250 might be the same as it looks exactly the same and it's part number is nearly the same also. David silver spares could get he VTR one for about $78 which aint bad but I still wasnt 100% sure that it was exactly right so I didnt order it from them.

Anyway, I slapped the bike back together and rode it to uni on friday and on my way back I popped in to Blue Wing Honda. The man there was very helpful and managed to identify the airfilter with his extremely large book of parts diagrams. Luckily there was a 89 VTR250 filter in the warehouse and he got them to send it to Botany Honda. He said I can take my filter and then compare it to the VTR one to make sure its the same before I buy it which is fantastic!

Hahaha yeah I agree with you xerxesdaphat, this is to much work just for an airfilter but it will soon be over I hope. I think that econohonda was gonna get the original VTZ aifilter which I think mihgt be a very uncommon part.

Well finaly got that air filter!! Turned out the VTR one is completely identical but for some reason has a different part number but atleast the hard work paid off.

Hopefully I'm not imagining it but I'm sure the bike is acutally faster now. It was definately in need of a change because when holding it up to a light the old filter didn't let any light through at all but the new lets heaps of light through the element.

Gotta love having new parts in your bike

Awesome. Yeah, Honda do that -- e.g. many parts such as fork seals/dust seals, exhaust gaskets, head gaskets are identical between the CB250RSA and CB250RSC. However they have different part numbers. Made for a slightly confusing time when ordering stuff, as my bike is a bitza.

You're probably not wrong! Old filters of that type tend to collapse and block off air when they wear out apparently.

You want to try getting parts for an RC30, rare as and bloody exspensive.
But wait, most of the seals and service kits for the likes of the master cylinders are the same as the CBR and VFR F model ones. In stock and a 1/4 the price. Go figure.
