1987 GSXR750 Shock

Hey guys,

Mines worn out pretty well completely, afaik they're sealed units? The bike will be undergoing a pretty big makeover (going FI and in future possibly turbocharged) and the rear shock has to go first obviously.

What fits and works well? I see TM has a shock from a 90 1100 rebuilt. I understand these 'fit' with some fiddling but jack the rear up 1" or so, being a newbie to suspension/shocks i'm not sure what that would do to my handling etc?

Do Ohlins still have shocks that will fit a bike this old? I know Fox did a shock but that'll be pretty hard to find too these days..

How much would I be looking at for various options etc, bike would eventually be daily rider and few trackdays.

Anyone confirm the original is a sealed unit too? (the 1100's have remote and are rebuildable)

Oooh this is quite a revelation, over on the gixxer oil boiler forums they seem to be non existant apart from a group buy of old stock (for a mighty cheap price I might add).

Bummer about the price, overseas sites convert to around 2 grand!

How good are Hagon converts to $750 which isn't bad. I don't need a full on race ready shock, just one thats better than the standard on the 87 - especially this stuffed one.

What say you suspension guru's?

You know there is so much misinformation out there that I even suspect some of it is deliberate.

2 weeks ago I custom built a shock for that exact model off the spec card and it is exactly the same as if it had been assembled in Stockholm. We do exactly this on a regular basis for many discontinued models, and I can report that in this instance the price is very very much below 2k ( I will reply to your pm with a menu of options )

Many also assume that Ohlins shocks are racing specific only, nothing could be further from the truth. While Ohlins do have a very big presence in racing ( NZ is no exception ) most of our customers are road riders who are seeking much better ride quality, improved dynamic ride height control and steering precision, mechanical grip and improved tyre life. And as your local distributor we are abundantly aware of our local road and track conditions and back it all up fully and properly.

This will not happen if the product is bought offshore or via an ''importation parasite'' that is interested in nothing more than taking your money. Whilst it is important to make money to live, my view is that it is to a degree a secondary by-product to the passion of what you do. If you do it well the rewards will follow BUT you will also have a clear conscience that you have satisfied rather than ripped your customers.

At the risk of being vilified I can confidently say that you will only get a very mediocre result with the cheaper alternatives. As is almost always the case, you only get what you pay for.
