    The interesting part that we are hearing locally is that when he found the first tracking device he rang the police to ask if it belonged to the them. He was told "No". But once he found the second one and advertised them on Trade Me, he is suddenly charged with theft.

    It will be an interesting point of law when the case comes up. He found an item affixed to his car. He did not need the item so he advertised it for sale. If he is found guilty it means that no-one can remove an unwanted accessory from their vehicle and sell it. Its like lifting the seat on your bike and finding a puncture repair kit. You dont want that kit, so you sell it. You could be charged with theft even if you don't know how it got there or who owns it.
