hornet idle problem

Ive recently put in new headlights into my hornet. Now when i start the bike it wont idle, it will start run for a few seconds then die out. If i rev the engine above 3000rpm the bike will run fine and with choke it will happily idle at 4000rpm, but it just wont idle without choke :S During the the installation of the headlights i had to pull the fuel tank back to conceal some of the wires, could this have some how disrupted fuel flow to the engine or stuffed up the carb settings??
If not anyone got any ideas whats wrong? driving me crazy

ive now put all original bike parts back on, and it doesnt seem to be that so my only guess is something to do with the carbs. Maybe i should just change the idle setting? Although it seems so stupid, i moved the tank back like 5 cms :S cdnt have stuffed that much up.

pulled my hair out for a bit then in the end decided to make the carburetor idle at 2000rpm...that seems to have *fixed* it for now :S

ok dumb question time - where is the idle adjust on a hornet 250 - I have a '96 as well.

My thought would be that you have kinked a fuel line, or pulled off the vacuum line.

ok that doesnt sound good :S how do you check for that? run your fingers up and down the fuel line and feel for a kink? I took it out for a 30min ride and its running fine, it now just idles at 2000rpm.
ill check the vacuum line.

Buoy, look on the right hand side of the bike theres a gap between the clutch connection to the bike and the carburetor, if you look inside there under the carburetor you will see a bolt with a plastic head and instead of a thread its got a spring around it, turn it clockwise to increase idle and vice versa.

cheers for that - have to get a new battery in my beast first, then will have a play. I thought that was it and had been trying to adjust it earlier, when my battery was not dead, as it seemed I had to always have the choke on...

tru, yeah have a fiddle around with it, like i said ive got the bike set at 2000rpm and it seems to be shifting in and out gears 1 n 2 smoother, dont think it would affect fuel economy that much cause the bike is hardly in idle except for at lights.

wow i gotta thank you MSTRS, it was in fact the vacuum tube. i had accidentally disconnected it when lifting the tank up. I finally located it and because of the awkward position it was in i couldnt be arsed reconnecting it so i just shoved a screw down it to block it and it worked wonders.

I still kept the idle at 2000rpm anyways :P but the engine sounds stable now.
