    Sony doesn't float

I bought myself a new phone about a week or so ago for $399. Not cheap but pretty sexy. It's a Sony Ericsson K610i.

Now, because I have recently accepted the award for "Most technologically challenged" at the Darwin Awards, I decided it'd be a grand idea to take it with me when drinking.

I had a fantastic night on the town, in pubs, in houses, all over the place. Anyway, apparently it rained hard (though I remember very little). I woke up drenched in my bed with my clothes still on and...my phone in my pocket.

I wasn't really in any state of affairs to be able to think of anything except getting warmer so I threw my clothes off, sorted a replacement sheet and went back to sleep.

Fast forward to 4:30pm when I wake up.

I pull my phone out and find the thing dripping. Shit.

So there we have it. I have pulled the battery out and the sim card to find it corroded slightly but the phone doesn't work at all. I tried cleaning it off a bit and plugged in the charger. There is a red light (that normally flashes green) but nothing else. I have a feeling it's completely screwed but am unable to be sure.

The warranty doesn't cover water damage so I'm just going to go out and buy another one tomorrow. I take it as punishment for being a dumbass.

I want to know if there's any sort of market for water damaged phones that I could throw the thing on Trademe for. Either that or a shop that would like it?

It's pretty hot, 3G, 2MP camera, all the bells and whistles...but it doesn't go. I doubt it's quite like a bike that you could get the parts from but I don't really have any idea. Any advice or help would be great.

    Thanks.

shops like vodaphone take old phones and they recycle what they can. try putting the separate parts of the ph in the hot water cupboard over night and see what happens [take both covers off, battery and sim]

Next time you get something wet, don't try to turn it back on. Dry it well for ages and then try.

Cheers for the replies, they're appreciated. I'll see how she is tomorrow, if no go I'll go get another one and maybe a protective casing if possible.

Yep Sunhuntin got it spot on, the hot water cupboard but for at least a few days. You may be lucky & get it going again but as sure as eggs it wont last, the damage is done & it will corrode & fail once again. Not a good idea to put that on trade me
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

Had to laugh when a mate dropped his [relatively new] shoephone in the bilge of his boat!
Salt water is even worse than rainwater... so there he was washing the phone under a tap to try and save it...

All you can do really is laugh, mate. I had a good grin about it explaining what happened to the people who tried to call me today.

On the upside as well, the simcard still works!

A hotwater cupboard can actually make things worse. it can speed up the corrosion process. The best thing you can do is pull it appart and drown it in IPA. You can get IPA from any local chemist for a few dollars. If you don't feel you can pull it appart, just fill a glass with IPA, take the battery out and dunk it in the IPA and leave it there for a few minutes and then let it dry out.
