First full time job was as an ASME IX pipe welder in Taranaki. Looking back I'm amazed I had the balls to go and train for it and find a job, and be the only chick in the place on both occasions.
Pay was spectacular, job was quite fun for a while, but to be honest I wasted a lot of years NOT being a journalist. I wish I had started writing then.
I think you learn more from the jobs that aren't right for you, than from the jobs that you like.

Mine was working at Whitestone Roading in Oamaru. I began by painting the wooden marker pegs (before they went fibre glass) and by the time I left (around 2 to 3 years later) I was part of the pot hole patching team. Didn't like the work much but I got to see loads of the surrounding countryside including staying up around Mt Cook, Twizel & Omarama several times.

Delivering artwork and ad materials all over the city to newspapers, publishers, radio, television and clients was fun .... on the office NZeta scooter (thats not me, only photo on the neet) and then when that lunched its gearbox, on a brand new Yamaha 80 (I was soooo cool!). Oh yeah and it was that bike I was riding when the concrete truck got me.

Apprentice Aircraft Engineer. I was seduced by the glamour, excitement and earning potential within the industry, and quickly discovered it was neither glamourous, exciting or well-paid. After being retrenched four times, and after having left and returned to the trade twice, I finally gave the aircraft industry the arse - and haven't looked back.
Congratulations on your first big job!
"Safety Cameras" Yeah, right!
