Think you must have seen some of the extreme engineering docos on discovery. They did one on building a tunnel from new york to england. Would get you there in 2 hours or so i think. Was pretty cool, used trains that levetate on electromagnetic tracks that run in a vacuum.

The hong kong airport would be one of the biggest recent engineering feats. That was imo alot bigger and complicated than the hoover dam (although with alot more sophisticated technology). Quite alot of decent "dreaming" engineering tasks are in the extreme engineering series.
