At least he doesn't try to pretend he's something else, unlike that dumb Hucker who was deputy mayor last time.

    I'm pleased you are happy.
However, I know Dick Hubbard quite well and I suggest you get your facts straight.
I doubt that I have met a more straight up and honest man. So to accuse him of lies and corruption means that you are the one who deals in bullshit - but you make no secret of that.
I'm also willing to bet that he could spot you at least 10 IQ points and still make you look stupid. So to call him a cretin further demonstrates your lack of homework.

But, putting my objection to your sparing use of the truth aside for a moment, all of these characteristics probably limit his ability as a politician. If you add that he is essentially a visionary team player and not a particularly strong captain, the the present outcome was inevitable.

He was asked to stand for the mayoralty by the way and by a group of businessmen at that. I actually share your view of leftist politics, so this doesn't quite gel for me. Perhaps it means that being in business doesn't necessarily make you right wing.

However, I suspect Dick was right in his assessment of Banksie as a "snake oil salesman", but time will tell.

Well in this instance maybe not evil, but definitely flakey.

The comment about the low standard of candidates is probably not far of the mark, and possibly has something to do with the voter turnout?

I have met Dick Hubbard on several occasions and vehemently doubt his chances at ever making me feel stupid. I quizzed him on several topical Auckland issues and he couldn't even answer one of them intelligently. Also his public speaking ability is embarrassing for someone representing Auckland.

Okay, perhaps because of his pathetic political beliefs I was a bit harsh on him so maybe his constant lies was a result of his incompetence. However, the Council is corrupt and he is, no was, the Mayor.

Dick Hubbard is about as visionary as a decomposing hippopotamus.

Believe me or not as you will, he is a much sharper cookie than you give him credit for - not much chop as a politician but.

I disagree - debating maybe, but public speaking, no.

I challenge your use of the word "corrupt". I can think of several derogatory adjectives which apply but that's not one of them.

I watched him grow his business and "visionary" is precisely the correct word.

However, even more importantly, he is a REAL biker. He's been known to climb on his Beemer and cruise the length of the country. Banks is a poser by comparason

Oh, and one last thing. Think what you may about his politics, when it came to socialist principles, he put his OWN money where his mouth is. Look at the employment history of his business if you want corroberation.

Last time I looked he was up to his neck in industrial unrest!

John Banks rides a Harley, Dick Hubbard rides a BMW! Hmmm. (thinks)

Aren't they both generally considered "poser" brands by the (silent) majority! John.(pt)

Yeah that was funny. He issued a press release telling the world what a wonderful employer he was and shouted the staff a trip to Samoa. When they got back they started industrial action.

    Visionary indeed.

Was the trip one way, and they had to find their own way back???

You show your lack of homework yet again.
How many hours were lost in that "industrial action"???

    Guess - go on guess.

    Zip! Zero! Zilch!

The staff did a bit of sign waving on their breaks.

It was a great example of a new union organiser trying to make their mark. She must have succeeded too, cos she's in parliament now.
His staff basically tried to show their support for the union without kicking him in the teeth.
Finn, shame on you. You of all people know better than to believe everything you read in the press.

Must have been soccer. Islanders can't play rugby very well.

Banks describing himself as centre right. Yea right. He is so far to the right that leftovers are not allowed at his dinner table.

If that is the case, I would consider it a good thing!
