Ouch. My first highside in years.
It had to happen.
Tim (my five year old in three weeks) has recently lost his training wheels off his bike and is going nuts over the local BMX track.
I've previously driven him in the car and let him loose on his bike, but today it was such a lovely day I thought I'd ride with him to the track, him on his bicycle and me on my bicycle.
My bicycle is an Avanti MTB, the bottom of the line competitive model, with a good alloy frame, RST forks and V-brakes, etc. It's okay for general off road.
Anyway, we got to the BMX track and Tim takes off down the track shouting "come on Dad". So Dad has to follow, and before I know it I'm roaring round the BMX track after him.
Over the first couple jumps, round the first berm, and up to the woop-de-doos. Got up over the first one and I'm flying through the air. Unfortunately I didn't pull back hard enough on the bars and came down right at the start of the next bump on the forks.
Over the handlebars I go and splat on the dirt. Ouch.
No protective gear other than a helmet. So I now have a big graze on my arm, a nice cut in my knee, nasty gravel rash over my upper thigh, and worst of all, I broke the strap on my Citizen Wingman I just spent $260 getting fixed and only just picked up on Thursday.
And my son's standing there laughing at me and calling out to all the teenagers on the track "Hey look everyone - my Dad's just highsided!!!"
So that's enough BMXing for a while...
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.
