    Question $2000+ water bill!!! HELP!!!

My girlfriend has just received a $2000+ water charge for her house covers the last three months We are soooo shocked (Normally it will be $300-$400) and found out there are some problems with the flush box in the toilet, the water just keep running.

However, the Metrowater suggested her to check if there is a leak in the house, if there is a leak. Repair it by a registered plumber within two weeks, she is eligible for a leak remission.

    My question is:
Has anyone come cross this kind of thing before? Whats the result of it?
How much the leak remission is going to be? Say Even with 50% of it, that's still $1000+, my girlfriend will be so broke

I don't pay for water... And refuse to pay for a comodity that is free and required for survival. Rates should cover pipes and delivery. Rates should also cover and few other things like rubbish collection... Heck what else do the use that money for... building unwanted standiums or something

We don't pay for water here in the Kapiti Coast either. You need to contact Metro water, for more info on the rebate. Does she own the house or is it rented. If its rented it may fall into the landlords hands?
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

Yeah. She and her mum own the house and she is paying for the bills and interest for the mortgage.

Not sure what you can do actually but id just say you had a leak if its an option
look out side for any wet ground you could have a leak underground
read the meter your self and ask for there numbers they last got BEFORE you tell them yours and what it is now
    could be a mistake

hi erix....that really sucks, dont know anything about it but go for the leak remission for sure and lay on the huge sob story to metrowater coz you never know your luck......also think if you ask right they will allow drip-feed payment.
i know getting angry with them wont help so try to manipulate them using pity.

    best of luck.

There was something similar in the paper couple of months ago, an elderly lady (in Pakuranga) had a cracked pipe under her drive. She fought back etc, unreasonable - Fair Go and paper etc - Water bastards halved the "fee" and let her pay it off interest free.

Its an all too common problem - they don't care nor understand. They will just quote the legislation "that the owner is reponsible for all the pipes from the meter to the house, including underground - sucks eh? fark all you can do about it.

Replace the sistern and fight them tooth and nail. Turn off the mains water, buy a pump, tank and use rain water - fark 'em I say.

    Rain water is very useful

Sadly nothing is 'free' anymore mate. Bottled water is a good example. Those in the suburbs or metro areas have to pay for the water. Rural like me have to install own water supplies and still pay as much std rates as others... yet we have no services to speak of.

Ok I have not read the rest of the thread but YES, I have seen this before. Advice; before you go to bed tonight, read your water meter. DO NOT use any water at all during the night. First thing tomorrow stumble out and re-read the meter. Then come back in and pee or what have you

If that meter has moved in the night there is a serious leak on your property!

Remission is a bastard to get. Your bill has to be a ridiculous % higher than previous bills to even be considered for a remission. PM me if you want to ask any questions.

Good luck, you may need it!

Thats cause people are too weak to stand up up and say "No..." I have never bought bottled water and will never support that industry. Paying for a free earthy resoruse is theivery... however

I will admit that you aren't paying for the actual water (so they say) what you are paying for is the delivery of the water... which use to be covered by your rates. If people don't stand up for their rights which are slowly been taken away, the rich get richer, and basic freedoms slowly being taken away

oh opps going off topic.... sorry ummm

Are you sure the meter reader donkey is literate enough to read the number correctly?

We just got a $630 gas bill for the month because the reader couldn't tell the difference between a 1 and a 7

MOM is on the money.. our neighbour had a very similar experience, doing the meter check is definately the 1st thing to do, fingers crossed it was only the toilet leaking to save more repair cost. Then definately go hard for a remission.. our neighbour's bill was about $2200 and they halved that..

Hopefully, you'll still have your last bill to compare the meter readings? What you are paying for in general is the service of treatment and delivery including all maintenance and upgrades. Sucks, I know, but when we live in town there is no option. I wouldn't want to drink Auck rainwater off my roof, would you? But good luck battling the system!

Staten Island ferry in NYC is still free as far as I know. Must be the last free thing in the world, though...

Not that it helps the original poster or his girlfriend...
