Would you believe the Police have gone back to IBM for help with their in-car computers? Apparently the "trial" of 30 units failed because of interference with their radios. They will fix them for about $8000 per unit and no doubt a rather healthy consulting charge not to mention 6 years of tweaking.

What am I doing so wrong?

I had the same situation when i wanted to move my account under my companies billing cycle.
I told them to get fucked and got them to just change the billing address.....cost = $0, for the same effect.

$8K each! Fcuk me, for that price, the cops could buy 'Tempest' spec (thats a mil spec for non emission of RFI from electronics gear) laptops - BRAND NEW! Well, OK - maybe not for 8K... but they shouldn't be too much more. About all I could find was that they were around US$7k-US$9k around 10 years ago (for a 200MHz Pentium cpu) - and given how the cost of computers has dropped since then... go figure!
Oddly enough (not!), there's little information regarding current pricing for Tempest spec PC's... Something to do with them being used for military or security services...

What are you doing so wrong? Hmmmmm. Nope. NOT going to tell ya! ...but it might have something to do with either IBM - or the Police...

They already have the Laptops. The $8k is for the tin foil.

Oh! Shit! BWahahahaha! So they're NOT getting what they paid for...

IMO, I think the govt needs a dept of Information Resource Management, to oversee all these governmental IT spending cock-ups. I had to deal with a US version when we were working in Russia for USAID. Pain in the arse to deal with, but they made sure that IT consultants/contractors couldn't go into 'run-away' mode with their budgets or equipment.

Just had a text come through stating that

"Apologies. Due 2a system error on 8/11/07 yr Prepay balance was incorrect. We've creditd u4 this error. Yr bal is now correct. 2 get yr balance FreeTXT 'BAL' to 777"

PS is it just me or should an apology form a company not come in tween text language?
You only need two tools in life:
Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't.
WD-40 if it doesn't move and it should.

Brute force and ignorance always prevails.
Failure comes from too little brute force, or
    too little ignorance.

LOL, yeah, I got the same text and just deleted it cos 1) the txt language apology just appalled me and 2) they were telling me something I had found out 8 hours earlier via balance check!

Credit to them - when I emailed through the complaint I had about $10 of my own money not being compensation, they agreed to let me keep the extra $10 without question. So it seems that when you do contact them with a bit of a rant, they do listen.

But no, not very professional to send apologies in txt spk!

    So sorry.

Now that my kitchen duties are over and done with for the day (it's not like I work or anything cos, you know, that'd just be wrong), I'll get to making some soft furnishings until my hubby tells me it's time to run his bath and he finally lets me go to sleep for the night once he's finished getting rid of his day's manly energy on me.
