For all those disheartened by the "Harley no nod/wave"

Well as I have said the Harley vs Japper no nod/wave thing is one of the
great mysteries of our world...along with crop circles and alien theories.

Tonight I was riding home from work on a country road on my 2001 YZ R6 japper....and coming toward me was the biggest loudest *scariest Harley Davidson complete with the stereotypical black attire wearing rider (*not quite...but you know, kinda adds to the excitement of the story)....well as we came up to pass he gave me the biggest over exaggerated head nod I have ever seen.......

    Good on ya fellow motorcyclist.

If I can, I wave to em all.
If you love it, let it go. If it comes back to you, you've just high-sided!

I'll wave to absolutely anyone on a motorbike of any type. I've heard all the "HD riders never wave" talk from KB before, but for me that rule never seems to have applied, some of the friendliest / most enthusiastic waves I get are from HD riders. Used to ride out to see T.W.R a while ago before we both got too busy, and I'd always see Harleys on the road. Most of them would wave, even the patched ones. In fact, the ones that seem to wave the least often are the commuters doing the morning ride to work. One guy I saw riding to work every day coming the other way. I waved at him heaps of times, he never waved back. So I stopped waving at him. He always wore a white helmet so he was easy to see and ignore.
But yeah, other than him I'll wave or nod at anyone on a bike.

I find if I'm on the ER-6f, then I get nods from the more sporty bikes. But at the weekend I was using Laura's XV535 Virago - I nodded to someone on a sportsbike... and was completely blanked.

I wonder how much of this comes down to our trying one kind of bike, sticking generally to that style and falling into a clique?

. Oddly enough, I wrote an article on this very subject. Because I've ridden a range of bikes, I'll acknowledge anyone on two wheels.

    High Five!

I personally like doing a High Five! every now and then on my bike. Usually when I've lost it at the end of a stressful day.

You do a distance High Five! to the other rider while yelling out "High Five!" in Borat's accent.

I end up laughing my berrloody head off.

OMG I even gave the nod to two cage's on Saturday. Reason: they saw me weaving down the road a short way from my house, one started weaving then the next one followed, I thought this was just too hillarious & good on them for joinging in on the fun.

What's happened to the camaraderie of biking?

there once was a time not to long ago when all motorcyclists aknowledged one another, my first proper ride in a long time yesterday and me and a mate both commented that in the 30 or so bikers we saw about 10 gave the nod or finger off the bar gesture (no not middle finger). i can understand the people who have a bike for ''transport only'' not bothering but most people have a bike becouse they love biking, surely the nod is part of that, maybe not??

The biker community is still pretty strong. Sure not everybody on the road waves or nods but that's not a big deal. What's important is that if you're in the shit you'll find there's plenty of help available readily from fellow bikers....

Funny you mention this....having just returned from ten days touring the South, we too noticed that "biker acknowledgement" was pretty thin on the ground. Perhaps we Wellingtonians expect too much.

"Everyone is friendlier the further south you go"

That is what I was told on arrival to New Zealand.... explains a bit I think!
