    Obituary of Common Sense

    Seems appropriate

Today, we mourn the passing of an old friend by the name of Common Sense.

Common Sense lived a long life, but died from heart failure at the brink of the Millennium. No one really knows how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools; hospitals, homes, factories and offices, helping folks get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness.

For decades, petty rules, silly laws and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in from rain, the early bird gets the worm and life isn't always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second.

A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including feminism, body piercing, whole language and new math.

But his health declined when he became infected with the "if-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus. In recent decades, his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing legislation.

He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers and enlightened auditors. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies; when reports were heard of six year old boys charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; when a teen was suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch; when a teacher was fired for reprimanding an unruly student. It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but couldn't inform the parent when a female student is pregnant or wants an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports.

As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments, regarding questionable regulations for asbestos, low-flow toilets, smart guns, the nurturing of Prohibition Laws and mandatory air bags.

Finally, when told that the homeowners association restricted exterior furniture only to that which enhanced property values, he breathed his last.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son Reason. His three stepbrothers survive him: Rights, Tolerance and Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

    Not a f**king chance

Labour are killing this country. They give everything to people that do jack shit and cripple the people that make the jobs and work hard. They also make it that it's always someone else's fault for a persons actions. I.e. someone can't do their job cause they're a lazy f**king waste of space but it's not their fault it's the employers or someone else at work. Oh and for good measure lets give them more money for their laziness and make it really hard for the employer to get rid of them!!!!!! and I see this as an employee not an employer!!!!!!!! it's a joke

They are creating a nation of people that think they should do as little as possible and get everything in return.

They have a surplus every year (great money management!!!!) but do we hear or see anything good done with it

That's just the tip of the iceberg as to why I'm not going to vote for them.

    It'll be National for me

Would you at least have the decency to expand and explain how you came to that?

I'm a realist and say it how I see it. No pissing around, and when I see good hard working people being fucked over and low life lazy fucks getting looked after thanks to the laws of a government they won't be getting my vote

Finn is da man - Finn for PM

I am a late reader of this thread and have found the answer in these posts. Especially Finn's.

While I understand your MO is "in God we trust" and by nature you will try to see good in everything, several hundred kiwi's a week don't agree with you and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

If we do not change the path we are on, NZ will have a very marginal middle class, a HUGE and POOR working class and there will be a few wealthy people that use this as a playground.

So back to your original comment, the difference is huge. It'll just take National some time to reverse engineer all the fucks ups and indoctrination. If they get in, it will be a mammoth task.
The difference is huge but most won't see that or notice until it is too late and it almost is too late.

Will vote National, but I can't see them reversing the social decline for quite some years, so Oz is pretty much on the cards for us.

This govt has brought us restrictions on free speech (police rules regarding protests that might offend a VIP, Electoral Reform Bill), partisan politics in schools (Al Gore's movie - pseudoscience at its best), not to mention Bradford's S.59 Bill - extremely poor legislation, again based on emotive rhetoric because cold, hard, science had demonstrated that the opposite of what was claimed is true i.e. they lied to us big-time.

Appalling that things like this now happen:
    http://www.stuff.co.nz/4283366a12855.html

We've seen wholesale social decline, decent medical care and education are things to envy in first world countries, and we've made rapid progress toward the bottom of the OECD rankings.

I don't care what the political party is called - any group that wreaks that amount of destruction to a country's internal structure needs to be removed, the sooner the better.

While I'd like to see things like personal responsibility, safe schools with quality teaching, etc. here, in reality I'm only going to get those by moving...
There is an assumption that Labour cares about those who leave NZ and the decline in living standards. They don't - it fits in with the plan to increase reliance on government support agencies and the percentage of voters for the left.

The result from non public survey taken a couple of months ago in a relatively affluent area showed less than 50% of the voting age population knew of the Electoral Finance Bill. The socialist strategy is almost complete - welcome to your re-engineered New Zealand "Cuba of the South Pacific"
    Here for the ride.

Boy oh boy, if only that were the majority opinion in NZ.

Seeing as effectively we're lumbered with this current government due to the combined voting power of the ill-(or un-)educated, hippy fruitcakes and control freak socialists that direct group (1), I reckon the only solution is a requirement to gain a voting licence before we take a damn bit of notice of which box you tick.

Something along the lines of your driving licence "scratch-and-win" test should be sufficient...if you can't demonstrate a working knowledge of our parliamentary system you don't qualify to vote - it's the next logical step.

Questions to be set by Finn, of course
