I'd love to - and I am. But it'd be bit quicker if I wasn't being taxed at damn near 40c in the dollar. Plus GST on every damn thing. Plus rates (that's local govt, I know, but while I'm spitting the dummy......). Plus Levies.

The reality is, she would be incapable of commanding that salary in the real (corporate) world. She has no life skills, and has never held a real job.

My personal theory is that the quickest way to increase the standard of living in NZ is to pay policitians the national average wage, reviewed every year. That'd drive the average wage up pretty smartly.

    Then the price of living + ACC + REGO+ Warrent + Petrol (which is double taxed pretaxed and then GST) + Rates, (or rent, mortgage) + food, + power + Phone + repairs + clothing + + + + + + + +

And the end of the week theres not much left over for any kind entertainment let alone saving on the average wage these days...

She needs all that money and more so she can have the thick gorilla-like hairs waxed off her back and putrid muff daily.
    And have her claws clipped.

Can't be cheap transporting her coffin around the country, either...

Poor Helen. I'm glad it's payrise got backdated to July. It was barely scraping by.

I hope all families struggling to make ends meet (I'm not part of one, cos I have no kids, but several friends are. We are skint enough some months) remember this at election time.
Also....how come the politicians get huge payrises, but those working for govt services (like the Armed Forces) are struggling to retain staff cos their pay rates are so low and keep getting told there's nothing in the coffers to allow pay rises to be given...????

That's a point - most of her salary must go towards paying some very highly skilled airbrushers to work on her photos - it's a busy year coming up so more photos = LOTS more money needed

Gee I guess that some of you lot aren't thinking.....

Cos should you vote in John Keys ooops 'donkey' in as PM..... then he too will be getting that money as his salary........ will you all moan and groan then. I guess not.....

why cos he has children, he has straight teeth....... but remember the man thinks that he is in the labour party..... he even stated that in a speech.
He will most likely send us to war..... get rid of nuke free within NZ..... Remember he thinks along the same lines as Rob Muldoon...... and just look what Muldoon did to our country.

As Katwyn stated she is earning every damn cent working 24/7 365 days a year. Helen Clark choose NOT to have children as have many other women in NZ.

What?? Quick, there goes the point. Too late, you missed it.

John Key is worth around about $40 million dollars. Do you seriously think he needs the PM's salary??

Anyway, the point is many normal families struggle to pay the bills, and this person gets an enormous salary, plus perks FOR LIFE.

They can't get enough cops, nurses, doctors or teachers and we have 3rd world hospital waiting lists. How many resources could be bought using the horrendous inflated salary the PM gets?

And when I do get a pay rise, it's not backdated five fucking months.

If you don't like Ms Clark's performance in the job, you get to fire her at the next election. Works for me.

Why does everyone see a $375K per annum salary as some sort of enormous mind-numbing wealth?

It's less than most senior partners in large law firms take home every year, certainly less than one can make running a residential construction company, and about an average wage for the CEO of a mid-level NZ company with, say, less than $50m annual turnover.

Viewed in context with the enormity of the potential fuckups and potential successes that can be generated by a Prime Minister, $375K per annum is almost paltry.

But I suppose a lack of imagination is one reason why all the moaners are going to spend the rest of their lives patting themselves on the back every time they convince someone to pay them $25/hour.

The last pay rise I got in a salaried position was backdated eight months.

Sometimes the 'private sector' is inefficient too...

Ok what about the CEO's of huge companies that earn way more than what Helen Clark gets..... and they work way less hours than her......

Bitch and moan about them as well.

There is always going to be people earning a lot more money than the poor or middle earner.

Those that cant even manage on $100,000 - $150,000 and moan that they are poor, need to learn to budget.

Hell some of us in NZ get well under $20,000 per year and can budget real well.

If you are lucky enough to get high wages/salary, then put it aside for your retirement...

Helen will be on a high tax bracket and a lot of her wages will be also put into a super account upon her retirement.

Says who? And these CEOs are (usually) skilled in the art of business for the good of their shareholders. Your precious Heilen is only skilled in the art of staying where she is

I think you will find that there is little difference here too...CEOs are often 'paid' in stock options etc

    375k isn't a heck of a lot.

I'm dammed if 375k would be worth it for me to be constantly made fun of, hassled about my appearance, my family hasseled and insulted....and to still attend functions with professionalism and no bitterness.

Hell, I was at a function that Helen was at. and we had a guy at our table making smarmy comments and generally being disrespectful about our PM as she was giving a speech......until at the end of the function she came to our table held out her hand out to him introduced herself etc, and chatted away with him -he acted like a star struck schoolboy. He also looked like a right hypocritical twat to the rest of the group looking on.

Talk about egg on his face.

When she finished he was rather subdued and quiet - oh and had nice things to say about her after that.

    Funny that

    You'd think so:

"Miss Clark, who gets a $19,000 allowance, is also allowed to spend it on clothes and grooming."

It's not about having wealth, but accumulating more. And being in power, funnily enough, gives him (and the National party) the power to run everything. Tax cuts to the businesses he has shares in, lower minimum wage so those businesses don't have to pay what they consider exorbitant amounts to their untrained 16 year olds (been there, done that), sell off the government owned utilities to private companies he can buy shares in, etc.

    Agree with everything else though.
