    Insect lovers WTF is this?

Came home today to find this thing on my curtain, sure it wasnt there when i left as it sticks out like a 3rd ball on a greyhound. After themy first thought was to as i am not really that fond of..well things look like this, couldnt believe the size of it and have never seen one before. The dog went nuts when he saw it (then again he chases flies) but i managed to get it to crawl onto some paper then took it outside.

Crazy man! That is the extremly dangerous long sting tailed Leptropedarious Hugmonius Frigniest Wasp. How you even were brave enough to encourage it on to something to transport it out side is beyond me.

You should have called Maha man, he deals to rats with the nastiest flyspray known to man.

Noo Zilund has quite a few different kinds of native wasps, all harmless and stupid, much friendlier than real stingy wasps. That's one of them.
I'll try to look it up in my book of NZ insects...

Yup, pretty certain it's some type of wasp. We have them down here.
Not as nasty or aggressive as the Yellow and Black ones AFAIK.

No, I was wrong, it's Rhyssa_persuasoria, the largest ichneumon fly and an impressive insect. Associated with mature pine woods and flies October - November. Female uses long ovipositor to lay parasitise larvae inside the giant wood wasp which are located deep in living timber.
FOund all over the world in climates like ours.
