Not all wasps can sting. I suspect this particular breed has forgone the option of self defense in favour of an ovipositor that can drill through wood and into the larvae of the wasps it has evolved to lay it's eggs in.

But what the fuck would I know?

They were introduced to prey on another pest insect, they can get quite big. The seem to be pretty harmless to humans, I held one that was prolly 10cm from top to tail last year, it was very docile.

    Nope wrong animal there.
You only need two tools in life:
Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't.
WD-40 if it doesn't move and it should.

Well it is a Ichneumon fly / wasp – commonly called a pole fly
But there are approximately 60,000 different species worldwide – and I don’t think it’s a Rhyssa Persuasoria, they tend to be more black and white than your photo, could be a Lissonota

And the tube is not always just for laying eggs, some Ichneumons inject venom along with the egg.

May of found it’s way inside the home by mistake – but do you have any newish furniture made from pine, including a new lounge suite - it could’ve come from inside the timber
