Greenpeace New Zealand's "name a whale competition" has been sabotaged, with 73 per cent of the votes favouring the name Mr Splashy Pants. The Greenpeace blog claims someone in Arizona found a way around their "one vote per person" rule and set their mouse on an auto-pilot-click-frenzy for "Mr Splashy Pants". The votes from this ISP address have been disallowed but thanks to social bookmarking site Reddit and top international site Boingboing, who have posted the story, the MSP fan base has grown legitimately. The competition is part of Greenpeace's Great Whale Trail, a tagging and tracking exercise for humpback whales in the South Pacific.

I've thought really hard about this and I'm with Swoop. Krill have been undervalued for far too long.

What makes you think the Japanese chaps give a rat's arse what you say on the inter web?

Besides why do we need to put an end to whaling? Is this a philisophical thing? (like People Eating Tasty Animals)

A lot of people only get upset because they are cute.

So they should just kill ugly wales and everyone is happy.

instead of 1 million people each person signing a petition, give a $1 coin to Paul Watson and the Robert Hunter - I'm sure $1mil. in donations to the only organisation that is prepared to stick their necks on the line would be much more appreciated than meaningless international petitions. It is the only organisation that I donate to.

The reality is, the japs only understand submission by force. It is ingrained to their culture (take the martial arts for example), and they have proven through countless conflicts with the chinese and other nations that they have a scary potential to stoop to unspeakable violence to effect their means. The 'icing on the cake' was Hiroshima/Nagasaki, when it was only then that they understood the true meaning of international pressure. Since then though, I cannot think of a single occasion that they have succummed to international pressure to stop anything. This was clearly demonstrated by the recent attendance of international 'celebrities' at the dolphin killing episode in Japan, where the protestors/observers were arrested and forcibly prevented from watching.

I predict this season will be different to the others - I believe we will see a ship being sunk in the southern waters. This will result from the sheer arrogance of the japs when they hunt and kill the supposed albino humpback

I'm being serious here, I'm all for whaling. They're not being hunted out in large enough numbers to wipe out the population -- and seeing as they're so valued, they'd be fucking stupid to do so. In NZ we've worked out that overfishing might give us good short term profits, but will wipe out the industry in the long term. The Japanese are smart bastards (well, I'll forgive them for the CB250RS's cylinder head), I'm sure they understand the same concept. The Icelandics are quite good with their sustainable whaling practices.

The comparison with eating cows made above is apt. Why should the Japanese and Icelandics give a shit because a bunch of hippies in NZ think whales are sacred and some kind of über-mammal? I certainly don't care what a bunch of rabid Hindus a few thousand miles away on the sub-continent think, I'm not stopping the occasional indulgence in Burger Wisconsin's finest -- and neither should the Japs/'Slandics pay any attention to us.

Interfering over-inflated greenie cocks can shut the fuck up.

Yeah. I heard the commission for a kill is quite lucrative.

    Whaling is bullshit.
Whales are not like cows and able to be farmed and managed in correct numbers. Japs have no clue as to how many whales are out there. You cant count something that lives like that. Its not til they cant catch any more that they realise that they have done damage. They are hungry bastards.

Particularly if you're the government of a land-locked African nation, or a third-world country whose principles can be bought by a large "aid" package from Japan. Or both. The IWC works on a one-country-one-vote system i.e. Nauru's vote is equal to the United States'.

How do you mean they don't know how many whales are out there? So where does IWC and Greenpeace get their numbers from?

What's the difference between managing whale stocks and managing fishing stocks? You can shove your sentimentality and Western condescension up your arse.

    WTF?

Since when did opinions on whales/whaling have any bearing on ones ability to ride a motorbike of any size/shape?

If I have offended you, or anyone for that matter, well tough shit - my thoughts and opinions are as valid as anyones, and until Big Brother educates me otherwise, I'll continue to exercise that right.
