The float moves a little needle into a seat... float floats up, pushed needle into seat, petrol stops flowing through the inlet/seat. If the seat gets a little dirt in it, the seat can't seat properly, and thus can't stop the fuel flowing through it... which makes the carb overflow. This can also happen if the float isn't adjusted to the correct height.

You want to make sure that the seat is clear... take the float off, and take the needle out, and then give the seat a clean.

If there is dirt on the seat, consider fitting a fuel filter. Just make sure your tank isn't full of rust first.

I got into the habit of switching the fuel tap off when not using the bike as well.
