In NSW the cops pull over anything that looks like a 250cc bike because virtually the only people that ride them are L & P platers. They pull you over, do a licence check and hope to get you for not showing your plate. As people come off their Ps they can't wait to upgrade from the 250cc to stop the cops from hassling them at random. Seasoned riders who go back to 250cc start getting hassled, so change back to a bigger bike.

At any roadside check, the cops would always pull me over, even if they damned near killed themselves getting through 3 lanes of traffic on an 80km/h inter-urban road in order to flag me down... only to find it was wasted effort because I was a good little boy.

I was pulled over on the TDM850 once, cop made a big effort to get me and not the other easier cars ('cos I make equal effort to position myself such that I'm the least obvious vehicle - subtly, of course). "Can I see your licence?" he says, walking around the back of the bike to check for a plate, sees none, comes back looking smug, "this is a 250 innit?" I reply, "Nope, 850cc" pointing to the hard-to-read script on the tailpiece. I'm still fishing for my wallet, he says, "oh don't worry about that, I thought you were a learner." We chat briefly about the bike, "on your way, have a good night."

Well that was the norm back when we were in Aussie, since then they've introduced the LAMS (learners can ride approved modest power-to-weight bigger bikes - pretty much anything except uber-sports weaponry) so the 250 issues probably aren't so bad anymore.
    Cheers,
    Colin

Ha, feck, it gotta suck getting pulled over by the cops and runnnig a licence check on you.

I personally haven't experienced anything like this, possibly because I am 6 foot 1. I too started riding in Aus, but it was in VIC so possibly the attitude their is a bit different, but then again I couldn't go that fast on 27 hps.

I remember Kim (Klyong82) telling me how he got pulled over once by the cops becuase they thought he was a kid/child on a 900 cc sports bike. The ones who know him here know he isn't the tallest fellah.

Pfft! Don't bother ME! - I'm still trying to get pulled over myself - last time for a 'random stop' was in 1996.

The other night I was pulled over for the first time in New Zealand. Wasnt do anything wrong so presumed it was for the reason stated. Suxed cause I had my boy on the back. First time ever on a bike (trying to get him into the bike buzz so he wont complain when Im always out riding) We got cut off in the fast lane on SH and he was very scared.....(wasnt a close call, I anticipated it happeneing but for a new pillion woud have been scary) so I moved to slow lane and did speed limit. Saw the motorbike cop on the side of the road and sure enough he was after us. Did nt have my license but he checked warrant rego and ran my license but specifically asked if I had my full. He let us go and since then my boy wont go on the back again It seems everyone had a negitive bike story to tell him after he told them about it....we nearly crashed (he thinks) and he hates cops....... shame hed be perfect if he rode ....sighhhhhhh...On another note police cant pull you over in the states without probable cause.....

I have when I had my GPX 250, it was the only time I have ever been pulled over.
The flashing lights came on and I stopped and parked, guy took my licence and did a check then came over to see my bike and said "Oh this bike is fine for restricted license" then said I was free to go.

Scratched my head a bit and then got angry that my burger was cold

Like the other guy said, ZZR400's are in 600 frames, they are big bikes.. they most definitely do not look like 250s.

gijoe mentioned you were in the market for a ZZR250, they are a great bike and eat up corners deliciously. They're not an IL4 but they're also not exactly slow either, if you know what I mean ;p

Ive been pulled over for a 'Random check'

Cop tried to tell me I was a liar, that my lil GSXR was 'At least a 400' (isnt on rego) as they dont make GSXR250's and therefore I was getting a ticket.

He got really grumpy when I just started laughing (I couldnt help it) and told him to radio in the plate if he didnt believe me.

ANY breach of licence = $400

One they tried to shove the breathaliser in the gap between my helmet and chin but gave up.
The other he checked Reg / wof then said "I assume you have a licence for this" I nodded and pointed to the tank bag he said "Great day for a ride, enjoy!" and waved us off (Wifey was on the back).

For those of you riding outside the conditions of licence, the fines pale signifacantly next o isurance non pay out should an accident be deemed to be your fault.
