The knee down is just to be used as a guide for lean angle (although it can also be used to save slides if you are awesome), you really need the right surface conditions, good tyres and a sporty bike for this tactic to be necessary, even when I'm racing I only put the knee on the ground if I'm worried about a front end slide. Focus only on your riding, if you need the knee you will find that you use it anyway.

Depends how fast you learn. Some bikes are easier than others. Originaly did it after bout 18 months in the uk on a cagiva mito (125cc 2stroke 916 copy), which had a steering damper and weighed nxt to nothing. Had a zxr 250 and my peg always hit b4 my knee did.

Now iv got a rs 250 aprilia and its easy as, although iv only found 1 corner so far where its safe and useful to do it.

Best advise if ur really wanting to is get ur slider pads, make sure youve got good sticky tyres (that youve warmed up!), find a nice smooth open corner and just get to know the corner. Make sure its quiet and theres nt much to hit if you go down and then just slowly work away at it. Practice practice and then practice some more. Dont ride outside ur confidence or ability, just take it slow. If it doesnt feel right or isnt necessary, dont try!!! Just keep taking the corner faster, and like others have said, if you need it you'll do it!!

On public roads it takes ages and there aren't many places its useful or safe to do it....to be honest its much easier and better kept on a track. But it puts the biggest grin on ur face when you get it.
Theres also a video on youtube that mite help, it shows the common mistakes people make when trying to do it, and gives a bit of a tutorial, heres the link:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCg3BMGe52M

If the link doesnt work just search 'mcn' in youtube and it should be one of the top results.

    Good luck!!!

when do u know its time to go to a track and wich track do u go to if u live in the naki
I've been riding 5 weeks and have scraped both boots on the bottom twice each , but I think it may be a little while for a peg. The monday riding school menthoring learners aperantly knows how to teach "peg scrapers wannabies" how to actually do it lol. MAy go there to check it out.
oooo , I ALMOST scraped a peg on the kawakawa ride last week, hope maybe next time ...

eh, well i suppose useful isnt necessarily the right word, its just a slightly more fun way to make it round the corner, and you can take it a lil quicker. I did sayin my previous message its best left to the track. Trust me i dont do it lightly, or when theres anything around, or even that often; but once in a while its just a bit of fun.

    its all about cheese

I know this isn't the question you asked but …
Like those old bastards on the cheese ads say … “All things take time”. The last thing you want to do is hurry this kind of thing along on a bike (on the road).
Get to a track, don’t go there with the intention to get your knee down. Get on the track, learn some stuff, get faster through the day and before you know it it’ll happen…

Note: this was written by someone who has now done two track days and no knee down yet.

    Just think cheese.

Its a 270degree bend from a 50 into a 100 n is nicely sealed. My previous bike didnt like it, cus the pegs would hit; on my new one its easer to get over n feels faster, whetha thats other elements of the bikes ability to corner faster i dont know, but being able to get over further on my new bike i feel i can get through the corner carrying abit more speed. whether or not its the quicker way through on another bike ???? but it feels better on mine if i get over, knee down or not. take a corner on a R1, a 600 monster and a 250 2stroke and they corner differently, mine responds best with my weight over the side.
