The knee down is just to be used as a guide for lean angle (although it can also be used to save slides if you are awesome), you really need the right surface conditions, good tyres and a sporty bike for this tactic to be necessary, even when I'm racing I only put the knee on the ground if I'm worried about a front end slide. Focus only on your riding, if you need the knee you will find that you use it anyway.
