I have one, although the novelty wears off pretty quick. You can program in the police channels with the frequencies listed here: http://www.nzscanners.org.nz/
then the scanner will just scan through the channels you've saved and lock on when one is open. You do pick up a lot of data these days though, but the main comms lines are all still analogue.

max smart "Thats veeeerrryyy interesting" Thanks for that drunken monkey
Spudchucker: piss off back to the crusier section. Im dont think of myself as a criminal just curious

And he also mentioned that when they lock onto a speeding vehicle with a radar detector it makes a different sound, to a speeding vehicle without a radar detctor

So they are more likely to nail the criminal with the radar for any thing they can

Police are moving to the P25 encrypted radio standard as soon as they can make it go ! Your investment in your scanner would not be a good one. The P25 radios will still be detectable with your scanner, so you could use them as an indication that there was a police car in the area, but thats about it.

Can they tell you have a radar detector ?

Yep, mostly. Your radar detector emits a small amount of leakage radiation from the local-oscillator.

Do they need a radar detector detector or does the standard speed monitoring radar pick it up.
Obviously they are quite visible in the dash/window as well.

Which is why it is fun sitting behind a car with a detector at the traffic lights.

Turn on the radar and watch everybody in the car on front jump out of their skins.
