    Engine Help

Hi, i really need to ID this engine from my go kart - the serial is k701-130061. From what i have worked out it is a gsx-400 engine i just really need to know the year so i can get some new coils for it. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

    Which coils?
If you are talking about the windings down near the crankshaft, they generally can be rewound if burn't out.
If you mean the ignition coils, then almost any brand coil will do the job. Just make sure that they suit a CDI ignition, (if that is what your engine has), or that
you need points combatable coils if that is what your engine has.
    Try your nearest m/cycle wrecker.

By the way, welcome to the site.

Sorry, should have been more specific, i mean the ignition coils. Do i need to worry about coil resistance? model number on coils is IG3311 TR12V51. I am gonna get some new plugs first to see if spark gets any better, i just wanted some idea on replacement coils if necessary.

try new plugs first. Re coil resistance: off the top of my head, (and its a worn out, fugly one), primary resistance, (the small blade contacts should be in hundreds of ohms range, and secondary windings, (checked at the HT lead and earth) should be about 5thousand ohms.
I'm speaking in general terms here, and some one online will be able to give you more accurate readings, plus resistance readings vary under coil operation sometimes also.(don't ask me why)

    Good luck.

if you go to any bike dealer they should be able to tell you what make/model/year/colour/flavour engine it is

if you think it's suzuki, take it to a suzuki dealer and they should be able to tell you exactly what you need to know

Just rang up a local suzuki dealer, said they have no ability of knowing what the engine is from given only the engine code. Does anybody know of a person/guru/god who can give me more information than those who should have it? The guy i bought it off says it was from a gsx-r400. From what i have worked out, barring the issue of dodgy plugs it would seem i have crap coils as I have tested the CDI and its putting out good voltage. If it is the coils, do i need to replace them with factory items, or will any negative pulse 400cc bike items work? Will it matter if i don't know the year of my motor and use cols off a later gen bike? Thanks for all the help so far, once again, anything is appreciated.

Pretty sure when I was trolling the web that one suzuki site also said they need the frame number to identify the model, engine number was no good.

Suzuki have always asked me for the frame number

well suzuki is pretty stupid then isn't it?

what good is a frame number of the engine may well have been transplanted? (and vice versa)

all my experiences have called for the appropriate numbers depending on the part - i usually just give both to save being chased up later

one bike i've worked on actually turned out to have a completely different motor to what i thought it was upon supplying an engine number, plus confirmation dimensions of bore/piston cause i didn't believe them

who remembers the old offroad honda shop in kumeu? they actually had rings for an '83 XR200 on shelf

I doubt any manufacturer builds there bikes thinking that one day the engine will be transplanted

well they should - why wouldn't they?

and my experience is that for older model dirtbikes both yamaha and honda do have seperate chassis and engine numbers to identify the year/model of their respective parts
