Visit from LTNZ Economic Compliance Unit

I've had someone visit from the LTSA Economic Compliance Unit. I wasn't home, so they left a card at the door with a note asking me to contact them.

I suspect this might have something to do with unpaid road user charges (diesel tax).

Before I call, I was hoping to find someone out who's been through this and tell me what it might be about or what they're up to.

    Cheers

basily they are going to take your first born, your left nut and your car/truck/whatever.
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot

The evidence to support any possible claim that RUC is under paid is thin. Certainly a spot inspection now would reveal nothing out of order. I have been advised by LTSA on previous occasions that they do not get involved in enforcement, they say that's the job of the police. The police are not involved in this, haven't been pulled over and checked at all.
I'm particularly interested to hear from someone who has been on the receiving end of one of these visits.

the EC Unit can screw you over, but mostly they are just after RUC that is owed. You can get a gap put on your mileage - say if you have paid up to 50000k, but have 100000k on the vehicle, the gap will allow you to have a current RUC, but owe the EC Unit the 50000k. The police work out the fine on how much is owed, x3. so owe 10000kms, at $30/1000 = 300 x 3 = $900 fine. Owe 50000k, it's $4500, plus the buy back in both cases.

Odo readings entered on the LTNZ site for WoF's are used for RUC.Some inspectors are getting on a bit and suffer from dyslexia amongst other things....a transposed digit can make huge differences to your RUC mileage.Don't ask how I nkow such things.

Check your odo readings with LTNZ.

Unless you really are guilty of course.....

The card under your door should say LTNZ, not LTSA.

Its Land Transport New Zealand dudes, Land Transport NZ for short (has been since 1 December 2004) http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/, soon to change its name once again when it merges with Transit.

What sort of vehicle involved here and do you owe them?

Economic Compliance Unit are said to give out more in refunds than they recover off bad guys I understand.

Google is my friend. Did a search on the job title "Audit Officer" and "Land Transport New Zealand" and found their job description spelling out what do and (and by exception) what they don't do.

It sounds like they are more about recovering of unpaid RUC (as per earlier post) rather than prosecution. Bought some RUCs yesterday so I'm up to date. Might pay them a personal visit today, their office is around the block from mine. Will report back.

Thought I should provide an update to this. Spoke with the nice lady from LTSA . The guts of it is, that they just want their unpaid RUC. No interest, no fines. In fact they'll even let me pay it off over time (sounds like interest free loan from Govt). I told her my digital odo was faulty, not displaying anything at all now and that I doubted the odo readings taken at WOF time were accurate. Suggested she find out what happens for diesel cars with no working odo (it has passed WOF several times ok). She said she would get back to me. That was a few weeks ago. House is for sale now, might be able to move before she comes back, he, he, he. Paul if you're reading this, better buy me a coffee and I'll tell you what's going on.

As far as the WoF goes,if the odo doesn't work then the reading from the last test would be entered, maybe add a km.....but not some random number out of their head. It's up to you to provide an odo measuring system....to not do so is breaking the law,it's for tax purposes, and tax evasion is a no no.For trucks they don't use the vehicle odo,but have a seperate hubometer.....you can fit one of those if you don't want to repair the speedo.
