It was pretty big here in Taupo, my door was swinging on the hinges, lights were swinging and almost knocked stuff off my piano

Wow, from looking at the seizmograph drums at http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/drums/, you can see it hit Gisbourne then two minutes later the shockwave reached the bottom of the South Island. Two minutes! That seems slow, but it is also a long way, so it seems really really fast.

"Massive earthquake rocks lower North Island
    Thu, 20 Dec 2007 09:08p.m.

    UPDATED 9:55PM
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale has struck the lower North Island, causing damage to some areas.

The quake measured occurred at 8:55pm amd was centred 40 kilometres south of Gisborne.

Police say there have been no reports of injuries, and a number of buildings have been damaged.

There are reports of power and phone outages and a retail building in Gisborne's Gladstone Road has reportedly collapsed.

People have been reported to be trapped in the elevator of another Gladstone Road building that is threatening to collapse.

Residents of some townships have been reported to be heading for higher ground, however there are no indications of a tsunami being created by the quake.

The earthquake was felt as far away as Auckland and Christchurch.

Civil Defence have been called into the area.

The earthquake was more powerful than the Edgecumbe earthquake that struck in 1987."

I don't think any insurer does. The government covers all that stuff through EQC.
