I have to admit. I have ulterior motives for hating on christmas.
    Reason one:
One year we returned to school to find that six of our number would never return.
Seperate drink driving incidents, none of them had been drinking.
    Reason two:
I don't get to see my kids.

I quite like the spending of time with family - even though they are not my blood.
I just wish that when I buy the most thoughtful gift I can manage they did not look like I just pissed in the pudding. Or worse sit there staring at it wondering either a) what is this? b) why on earth would he think I want one of those.

Well. Last year I was stuck in ICU with a tube stuck down my throat to help me breath and another smaller tube stuck up my nose which fed & watered me (although I doubt anyone here would agree that the glop was actually food). We had a small family get together and everyone else got to eat & drink. We all opened presents, but all I really wanted was a long cold drink of water from the water cooler by the Nursing station.
This year we are having a similar small family get together. BUT I can eat and drink, which I am VERY greatfull for. There was a time that I wondered if I was ever going to be able to breathe independantly. I can now and are VERY happy about it. As for the presents? Who cares? Got something small/not too expensive for everyone and if I get something, its a bonus. Enjoy the time you have because you have no control over when its time to end.
As for all the moaning and whinging on this thread about Christmas? Sounds like a bunch of individuals who are pissy that they do not get what they used to as a kid. Because as far as I'm concerned, thats what its all about (Christmas is for the children) and getting together with significant others.
So likewise, if there is anyone here in the naki who has no where to go, give me a PM and I'll tell you how to get here. All you need to bring is something nice to eat, that can be put on the table with everything else.
I must admit, that when I worked in one of the local butcheries, I was happy to get to the end of the silly season. However each time someone came in and spat the dummy, we kept a straight face and once the person had left we all pissed ourselves with laughter!
Get angry about it being Christmas? Why? What is it that your really angry about?

Xmas is what you remember as kids, enjoying fun with cousins at the grandparents, opening presents as early as can be.

The fact you can enjoy xmas is the best thing about it,being with family and friends is worth more than dollars.

Four years ago I had an injection which was infusing chemo 24hrs into my blood stream, and undergoing radiation, had 5 weeks to go.Met some grumpy old coots as well, most were bloody good fun people with one thing in common.Wasn't hard to see someone worse off,and realise xmas is not about monetry things.I was told prior to surgery I was lucky and after the operation, was told that I would have been dead by xmas(2003)if I hadn't taken the advice of loved ones and got my stubborn arse into the doctors, and got checked out.

The best part of xmas is watching the kids open their presents which is all to quickly over as they age,but now seeing my step grandkids open their presents is cool(8,6 and 9mths),having a good old bbq for lunch and few beers.

I work in retail and wonder why people buy things at xmas, although over the years the emphasis in furniture is anytime, not so much at xmas.Even the fact that kids now get vouchers for the warehouse is a sign of the times, with boxing day sales, hopefully this trend will vanish, surely people can go two days without shopping, but it is our number one passtime.

All I can say is those $2 and similar shops are good for kids, heaps to buy and cheap,I'd rather give 5 or so cheap gifts than one larger one.

I got beat up lots by Christians growing up so I tend to walk away when people mention this particular religion.
Originally the birth of Christ was attributed to the month of April. About the 4th century there was a general conclave held under the papacy of Gregory. It was there that they decided to move the time of the birth to December so as to attempt to obscure the pagan festival of that month.

Until the late middel age it wasnt even celebrated, even by the church. It was a minor date in the Christian year.

Since Victorian times it has been gradually eroded until today it is no more than a commercial venture and a national holiday.

    if that makes sense?!

    See above...

I'll never forget the reaction from our eldest daughter when she was 13 and had put up with an old Raleigh 20 while her school mates were on the new 10sp bikes. She knew we were poor and had said she really didn't mind the teasing as she knew we were doing our best. One day, she came home from school and went to her room to find a brand new 10sp mountain bike. I'd been determined somehow to buy her one because of her attitude and managed to get it. It wasn't her birthday, or Xmas, just a gift at the time I could afford it and because I wanted to. Her reaction was absolutely priceless and she has never forgotten it.

That is what, and when, gift-giving should be all about. Not because it is expected of you.

For far too many, Xmas is a painful reminder of what they cannot have or do, or the loved one's they have lost, and stress and pressure at a time that should be happy. I personally resent the commercialisation of a religious falsehood and refuse to participate on principle. We have a very close family, both immediate and wider and spend a lot of time enjoying each other's company and we probably spend too much on gifts at all times of the year, but we're happy and free of the stress of the demands of such public holidays.

I do wish all a safe and happy holiday, or for those working through, my commiserations, I'll think of you when I'm out on the bike...

Christmas is bloody fantastic, Kids bouncing off the walls with excitement and I'm not that far behind them.
The look on my kids faces Christmas morning is just awesome and I will do my best to make sure the Christmas spirit lives on with their children.

Anyone that doesn't like Christmas should perhaps try putting a little effort into it, Get together with family and friends, Dig the gorse out of your pockets and have a bloody big BBQ tea and put on a few drinks, I'm sure the laughs will follow and some fond memory's will be revived.

I know my family will be having a ball tomorrow and it may just carry on to the wee small hours or until the belly can't hold anymore.

The holidays are just an added bonus.

Grinch's may flame me if they wish.

    Merry Christmas to you all.

    I'll give ya a hug.

I am Christian but agree plus there is debate as to date anyway given position of Star at 2000 years ago, but I guess you have to move through all that and just enjoy the one time of the year when Family / Friends get together.
