One hasn't forgotten what one was told less than two years ago... but one is still allowed to regard a given piece of road as a goat track™

Now that that point has been made, I don't mind the Summit Road, but I still regard it as a bit of a goat track™. But the fact is, the point has been made that most of the group don't like it (as Rashika's mentioned, it's not exactly newbie friendly™), and since this is still supposed to be a newbie friendly™ ride, we'll take that under advisement. I'm happy enough riding it, it doesn't cause me any major issues, but we'll see what the rest say.

gotta correct you there DE... i never said it wasn't newbie friendly, BUT it does pay to be aware when riding it. It would actually be a good road for newbies, as long as they take there time and dont try to Valentino Rossi it.
And nah it aint a goat track at all, I'm sitting here and cant even think of any roads i would class as that now! They seem to be disapearing, hell Arthurs pass used to be that way... always scared me and THAT was in a car! (long before the viaduct and all that other stuff done to make it all so easy).
Try some of the other challenging roads like the karamea road, or Queen charlotte sound road: both are difficult roads due to weather/traffic/road surface/rain/debris/corners (one or 2!), but still have their positives (like the views on both), yet few would call them goat tracks... except maybe the Karamea road!
The summit road is nice cos there is not much traffic, and generally you can see if there is grit a long way off... and if you ride it fairly often then you know where the bits to watch are. And yep i know exactly the bit you talk about with grit, it does seem to be there summer or winter too.

The cruisy ride doesn't have to go any long distance, in fact shorter and slower would not be a bad thing. And then a wee blat back to Halswell via Motukorara... sweet!

DOnt mind on the route, and would like to try summit road as I havent yet, but there is no way in hell I am doing it in the dark, or near the time of darkness. I aint stupid enough to try that. But hey if people are keen I dont see why we cant take it slow on the way to our destination, and come a different way back.

Newbies wont learn anything if they don't step out of their comfort zone once & while and the southern end from The Kiwi to Gebbies is 250 country over & over

20+ years of riding all those roads on bikes from 125cc -1200cc taught me that

I went over it to Karamea at a cruise and fanged back over it real quick (atleast I think I was going fast). Bloody great road, 200kms of fun from Westport to Karamea and back to Westport.

The straight bits at the end are really good for winding open the throttle to. Just have to make sure there arnt any farmers herding sheep down the road first.

especially on the hills.
But you really need and rely on your full beam lighting , which is hard when you following

awesome... yip but very tricky to, I didnt like it so much with the debri, holes, moss etc every corner was something different and thats what I did like but IMHO on the day I did it.. its a goat track, dont mean its bad.

Also, at the risk of starting a squabble (would rather not), just because you (and dangerous) are very experienced does not mean you are somehow transformed into biking gods, making your opinions any more valid than the rest of ours. We're all here to ride our own ride - hell, that's why we ride bikes - not to be told where to ride and how to do it.

You and dangerous (are the main antagonists, but there are and always will be others) are at great pains to remind some of us that we're inexperienced and seemingly know nothing, totally at odds to the fact that I've ridden with neither of you recently, in any kind of setting. dangerous reckons I've bitten off more than I can chew with the ZX-6R, and you reckon I won't listen to a word you say, and keep trying to make me eat humble pie. Well guess what? While I'm not as experienced as you, nor am I a baby and I don't expect to be treated as such just for being younger, which I suspect is the main reason - you see me as a kid.

Thanks for everyones response, and in the end if a route can not be sorted out on here, then it will be sorted out by those who show up tomorrow night and even if a route is sorted here it is still subject to change, so if you really feel that strong about it, then show up 2morrow and voice your opinion there.

On the downside I dont know about you lot but the weather just took a real dive out there.....

Right then boys & girls, if that's over and done with.....

The Summit Road from Sumner to Sign of the Kiwi is a cracker of a road. That's where I have been doing a lot of my practise recently, and the next section down to Gebbies can be good or can be poor depending on the nomral things (traffic, road debris) but I'll admit is in worse condition and much tighter than the first stretch.

Perhaps one contingent could drop down to Governers from the Sign for those not comfy with the Sign-Gebbies and we can all meet up at the Halswell? Or the Black Tulip (?) at the Gebbies-Akaroa Road intersection then onto Halswell

Actually Ryan in terms of biking you are still a so instead of blowing your trumpet like such just pull your horns in. And as for not having ridden with you recently ??? who the hell was following you through from Governor's bay to Allendale not that long ago mmm?? remember the couple of PMs late last week???
