Rust removal?

Had kind of neglected my bike, left it out in the rain a few too many times and now it's got a bit of rust on it. Was just wondering how I would get it looking how it used to? Had been to Repco but all their rust treatment things turns it black, ready for painting. Is it possible to get it back to how it was?

Hi, Repco should have little clear liquid spraybottles of acid for under $10....My local repco does. In bulk the stuff is called metalbrite. Any way, you spray it on but watch your hands...and it eats alluminium...Let it soak for a bit and rinse off with water. Your rust will be gone, but the "new" look will be depending on how badly it was pitted.

Shame on you

The rust on that spring appears to be beyond surface rust (which can be easily removed with a good metal polish) as I can see the chrome flaking and peeling. As a motorcycle cleanaphile this caused me great distress and resulted in a mild case of the squirts. Don't worry I feel better now

Give the springs a light spray with WD40 or CRC (keep it off the rear brake) and then rub with a steel wool pad - this should remove most of the crap - rub with a cloth and a good metal polish. It will improve and if it looks OK you will need to keep up with the polishing or it will rust again very quickly.

and you might want to keep a (very light) coating of some sort of oil on them. once something is pitted like that it will come back quickly.
