You wouldn't think it but its a very expensive sport. Methanol and Road race wets. For some reason you need like shitloads of power.

Engine capacity is limited to 1000cc so you can't use Hayabusa motors etc.

Will have a talk when I see you next.

Considering the conditions I would have thought torque delivery would be more important than max outright HP. But I'm new to this as you know.

Manawatu. Stepsons really keen. I hate crowded places with lots of noise but can see myself getting roped in big time.

Does he want to ride or swing off the side of it?

There are practice days where sometimes you can have a go?
But sometimes there are rules and regs about getting licences etc

He's keen on swinging. Went out to the Ohakea practice track today and had a go. Did it years ago. Can see it going further than that though with possibly me at the helm, hence the request for info .

Thats what I would have thought as well. Thinking a big VeeTwin would do the job best. Inline fours and VeeTwins are both well represented.

But when you think of it in most of the speedway classes they are power crazy.

Spose if you go the the manawatu sidecar champs this weekend you'll find out what/who is doing the winning.

The chairs with R1s and the like are using most of their power spinning the back wheel.
Especially if just starting off in the sport, go for something a little less intense. Even an old GS1000 will get you round the track fast enough. Lot less expensive for tires, too.
Anyone using TL, SV, VTR engines? V twins were the go when I was involved in speedway (near 20 years ago) but then they were Weslakes, Goddens and one brave soul in Wellington tried a Harley - pretty, but dead slow, in spite of the cubic money shovelled at it
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

We have a dedicated sidecar site with links to competitors sites So have a look at Sidecar.net.nz ,

Mike Zachan builds bikes but i think he is having this winter off. Mikes race framesHe was trying to sell his new one around a month ago.

There is going to be 24 sidecars in Palmy on Saturday night for the Man2 Champs, so lots of bikes to look at and most of the nutters are really good to talk to. I am the track photographer there so if you like I can introduce you if find me find me 1st.
