Well the Philip Pullman books knock Harry Potter for six in my opinion, for those of you that like HP but are looking for a bit more depth, try the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, the first of which is The Golden Compass.

Looking forward to the movie, I haven't seen it yet so hoping it hasn't mangled the books too much. Will see it this weekend, methinks.

I'm a sucker for fantasy movies but we thought it looked and felt wonderful, kids would love it (we are all kids really). If the next movie had been on there and then we would have paid to see it..

The special effects were top notch!

Great books, really enjoyed them. I do like a bit of steampunk. Nicole Kidman does worry me too, however

Will have to go and see it with the girl.

I thought Nicole was an inspired choice for Mrs Coulter. Beautiful but emotionless, aided by liberal application of botox. She is supposed to have a fairly frozen facade in the book, so it fits.

    The book was fantastic.

I thought the movie was poos.

    I read the book first.

You're a cat in a helmet powered by a Unicorn. Your opinion isn't entirely reliable.

I thought the book was crap personally.

And I've given up going to SF/F movies, they're invariable so littered with errors they're all but unwatchable.

A sucker for fantasy? then you'd love Beowulf (apart from the fact it's fucking rubbish )

Group of us watched both Beowulf in 3d and the Golden Compass on thursday, and came to the conclusion that Beowulf was better.

The golden compass was insanely fast paced. I felt disappointed that they hadn't made it a four hour long film and kept more of the story.

I watched the movie and thought it was fantastic, I want to see it again actually.

The first book is called The Northern Lights and i'm on the third book already, it is brilliant. The movie does differ from the book slightly but a lot less than most movies do and when you have read/watched both you can see why they have done it.

As described in the book, Nichol Kidman is a fantastic choice for the roll of Mrs Coulture, as is Daniel Craig for Lord Asrael,

    Highly recommend both.

Beowulf is great in 3D but Enchanted is a bit weak.
