Yep, that's why I generally don't use them either. I like things to be side-by-side; hence the love for dual screens
The comment on RAM usage was in reference to NighthawkNZ's comment about feature bloat.
Im not confused... 2 to 3 kb of ram so it is still using resourses that would be better off being used for sothing else... heck even if it was one line of code and 0.00005kb it still is at the end of the day resourses being used
as above, in some ways it would perfer it to be a seperate appilcation so if I didn't want to use it then its not loaded with the core OS or window manager, which in some resept I find the MS Windows virtual desktops managers better because if not used, not loaded...
When in use they use a little bit more memory, which application is open and in which virtual desktop etc... (and also remember each desktop can have different settings) again might be tiny bit of memory but still would prefer that memory being put to better use.
why notI do all the time and I use it more than Linux
My point is a bloating software, happens no matter what as new features are introduced (yes I know Virtual Desktops have been around for yonks) I didn't see the point of them back then and don't see the point of them now... but each to there own
exactly, each to there own
I prefer dual screens as well, especially when I am editing video, and as I said even if they were 1 line of code and only took up 0.00005kb of ram I would rather have my system using that 0.00005kb of ram processing that video, or audio file or graphic image
This is where I am paid to sit'n browse the Interdweeb, post shit on KiwiBiker, etc.
I feel a desperate need for a caffeinated beverage coming on...
... and that's what I think.
Or summat.
Or maybe not...
Dunno really....![]()
My blardy messy desk.......
There is also a stool just in front of the chair to rest up my sore knee on.....
I use both (actually, my second screen is my laptop, controlled from my desktop's keyboard and mouse using synergy).
Sure, it's useful to have things side by side to compare, and multiple screens are very useful for that. There's also things that don't need to be compared - I don't need to have a KB browser next to anything else, and usually email and irc aren't related to much else either. I keep these things on separate virtual desktops - as well as things I'd rather have adjacent, but don't have the screens for.
IIRC I have 6 virtual desktops on my desktop, and 5 on my laptop. I only usually use one of the laptop's at work, but at home, I might have trademe (and related search windows) on one, KB (and related movie players or whatever) on another, email on another etc. Mostly I don't use them all, but they're there when I need them. And a second screen on a laptop is a little impractical, when not used at a regular location.
