    eek A1GP v Boeing...

    who will win?!

dunno.. but if you're bored, then go watch it at Auckland Airport at 9.30am tomorrow (8/1/08) and watch the A1 car get his ass handed to him by a 100 ton jet.. Should be a good race tho.
    I'm gutted I can't make it.. don't think..

Considering (and I'm sure Terbang will enlighten here) V1 in the 777 would be around 130kts, rotate around 150, using a good 1.5km of runway to acheive 150kts, I'd say the car will win.

disclaimer: i've just guessed the numbers - looking for performance details now

The car will clean the jet up & hand its ass to it.
They do this kinda shit on Topgear from time to time and cars slower than A1GP racers consistently whip the asses of planes quicker than 100ton Boeing passenger jets from a standing start to the end of a runway.

see, I was thinking the car would win, any time.. but for some reason, I'm backing the plane this time.. now, if I was driving...
I'll take my bike along, and just line it up next to them, like we've just pulled up at the Queen Street traffic lights

    Hmmm...
    Jet:
Is it empty? - Hope so!

    Distance to travel???

    Short distance = car.
Longer (say .75 runway length) the plane has a chance.

    Gonna guess the cage though.

Yup he'll probably be rotating around the 140 odd mark which is around 260 Kays. Dunno much about the 777, however being a typical jet it will initially be slow to accelerate especialy if he's heavy (lots on board). I reckon the car will have him. If it were a Gulfstream though I wouldn't be so sure as they have a tremendous acceleration rate up to a rotation of around 160 knots (roughly 300kays). The ground roll on a Gulfstream at max weight is around 1300m. However that aircraft passing 1000 feet will have accelerated to 250 knots (460 Kays). If I were racing a car, I'd use reduced flap to get the maximum ground roll (I guess the flying bit doesn't count) and max rated thrust. The jet, in the 250 to 300 KPH area, will certainly be accelerating harder than the car, but it just may be too late.
If you love it, let it go. If it comes back to you, you've just high-sided!
