Vietnamese bikers terrorised by wild elephants

And you thought your local commute was bad…

Three wild elephants that escaped from a wildlife park are terrorising bikers in Ha Tinh province in Vietnam. The elephants have crushed motorbikes in their path and stormed into residential houses, according to local authorities.

One of the most recent attacks was on Nguyen Van Phong, a biker transporting chickens. After abandoning his bike to escape, he returned later to find carnage. "It was a frightening spectacle," said Phong. "The motorbike was a pile of scrap iron and 20 birds were completely crushed in their cages. Nothing could prevent these animals from doing that."

Local chairman Phan Duc Cung said the wild elephants broke out of Vu Quang national park during their mating season, which regularly falls on lunar July and August.

"We have not yet found out an effective preventative method," he said "Killing the animals is not possible. People must be cautious of elephants, taking the initiative to avoid them. Do not go out at night if it’s not absolutely necessary."

Even more scary, can you imagine trying to cart 20 chickens from one side of Auckland to the other on your bike ? Something like herding cats.

Was up in the Golden Triangle a few yrs ago,,,
    On a jungle trek..we were in a 4wd hi-lux.
10 in the back..3 in the front ,,and 1 on the roof.
on a narrow track and we came across a huge bull elephant.
got within a metre or so, and this thing put his head down and charched the ute.we went up a bank and got out of his way..
luckly his feet were manacled to-gether,,so he couldnt run very fast.
something must of pissed him off.
take a bit of stopping those mothers.
got a few more stories about that trip..
    lots of fun..

It's not often that I'm transporting chickens and I'm not sure that possums or bunnys have anything against them. Stoats & Ferrets may be another story...
