Wheel Bearing 125

Just changing K14s wheel bearings whilst he has gone out to dinner........


And having a few issues with the rear bearings...... namely getting them out!

The two bearings have a tube between them that prevents getting a drift on to the bearing on the other side......

Poor diagram red bits are the inner section of the bearing and the tube in black prevents getting a drift on to them to tap out with a drift, managed to get the fronts out and replaced easy enough.

Any ideas?

Normally you can move the tube slightly which allows you to use a punch to knock out the bearing on the opposite side to what you're hitting from

Just use a big hammer, they're not your wheels so it doesn't really matter

I must be having brain-fade; do you mean the spacer? I had a bitch of a time getting the bearings out of my ZXR rear wheel because the spacer was so snug that I couldn't move it out of the way to get a drift onto the inner face of either bearing. Everyone said "oh, it'll just push out of the way," but there's no way in hell that thing was moving far enough for me to get a drift in.

In the end I had to disassemble one of the bearings in-situ so that I could pull the spacer out and get a drift to the bearing on the other side.

Pull the plastic cap off the side off the bearing, break the cage (I gave it a good belt with a punch, it snapped, repeat until fade) roll the balls round to one side and pull the inner race out.

Two things to watch for, though:

1) be careful breaking the cage -- don't damage what lies behind the bearing;

2) at the end of this procedure, you'll be left with a single outer race still in the wheel, so make sure that you'll be able to get a drift to the inside of it and pop it out, or else you'll find yourself reconstructing that bearing you just took apart so that you can use the inner race to belt it out. Reface your drift so you have a sharpish lip to get onto the inner race. They can sometimes be right pricks but I've never had one yet that's beaten me.

Yeah had to do what Kick said, found some holes in the ?hub? which allowed the drift to push the spacer across and out of the way a bit.
