They do their job fine thanks. No engine covers worn through, no oil escaping with engine running and bike on its side. Most Sportsbikes get crashed so hard the crash bungs are a moot point. At normal street speeds and in those topple over in the garage accidents they can save you hundreds of dollars and make sure your bike is at least mobile. The normal bin at 180 km/hr on a 35km/hr corner and end up three paddocks over sportsbike crash isn't going to leave a repairable bike.

There's a reason for that. Lads step off 250s and tuck in behind the screen and pretend they are Mick Doohan and crash on 35 km/hr corners at 180 km/hr and the farmer comes along after the accident and uses a front end loader to pick up the bits of bike strewn across three paddocks.

Such is the fate of a second hand, two generations past 600cc Sports bike.

I know I'm not likely to find a good one in my price range at a dealer, I'm quite aware of that. That's why this WTB is on here...
Actually, I was being straight up. You've identified, in ChCh at least, a hole in the market.

Each case is different... how about 30-40kph, mates bike was written off as he left an intersection when he found gravel, got high sided, bung ripped out of frame... bye bye bike.

That being said... I have bungs.

Deviant... prices are always inflated over summer, as that is when demand is highest. Simple economics of supply and demand. However, if you have to buy and sell at the same time (most of us are poor bastards and have to do this), you sell high, buy high, or sell low, buy low.

*Wanders along and *bumps* into the thread* ...

Was going to go look at a GSX750 Katana this evening, about a '96 I think, sounded quite promising anyway... but then some utter pillock flew down from Wellington to see it at lunch time, and wound up buying it. Bah! Not enough bikes up for sale in Christchurch as it is without some Wellingtonian stealing it!!

Hope it wasn't anyone off here, or I'm coming after you...

    Get a VFR400 or an RVF400.

There's a couple of reasons why I don't really want to. Reason number one is that they're mostly quite overpriced for their age - I'd rather get a newer bike for the same kind of money. Reason two is that although they are reliable bikes, they are known as being more expensive to maintain. Reason three is that after test riding a 1990 NC30 and not being terribly inspired, I would quite like to see what a 600 has to offer. Sure, the NC30 I rode handled nicely and went well... but I really didn't like the flat spot that happened between 6000 and 8000rpm (which I hear most VFRs exhibit to some extent - anyone know more?), and the overall small size of the bike was another minus. Not knocking them at all, but it may not be the bike for me.

Great choice ... that's my bike ... and about what I paid for it too in the Autumn so geting one for that now is a good deal. But I agree, an F2 or F3 for the money you want to spend is ideal. We just sold our 1990 CBR600F all minted up with heaps spent on it for $3,500 so that's the sort of money you're looking at

Might be worth checking which bikes have crash bungs available, too - my 93 GSX750F doesn't. My guess is that the people who want them most are those that go hard - and have proper sports bikes. My bike is too tame for that, so I can't get crash bungs or aftermarket fairings. Or it could be just that it's too old.

That's exactly what I'd like to be able to do - hop on and have a good ride of a few of them, like you say, ZX-6R, GSXR, CBR600, YZF600 (Thundercat), and such like... only I can't for the life of me find examples out there I can actually have a ride of! That said, I've got a guy popping over this afternoon with a 1995 YZF600 Thundercat so I can have a look at it. Only trouble is I don't know if I'll have time to test ride it since today's shaping up to be a busy day

That'd be appreciated actually, because when it comes down to it, I don't really know very much about bikes. Sure, I've learned a whole heap over the last two years, since I've been into them, but there's still a heck of a lot to learn! Sarge's thread about buying a used bike has come in handy though, good knowledge in there.

If you spot any I might be interested in (up to $6k preferred but can stretch a little if I fall in love ), let me know and we'll jack up a time to go check it out

Had a quick look at the Thundercat this afternoon. A few dings and scratches here and there, but overall pretty straight I thought. The owner wasn't too keen on letting me take it for a ride (can't blame him) unless I was definitely keen on owning it - an answer I wasn't prepared to give on account of not having ridden any of the other sports 600s - nothing to compare it to. He did mention he might come along to the W.N.R next week though...
