Bikes often have shunt regulators. These are easily destroyed by careless jump starting or recharging if the battery is left in the bike.
Best idea - remove the battery from the bike, and charge it on the bench. If you must charge it while it is in the bike, always remove the earth lead.
To jump start a bike you should :
- connect the donor battery in parallel with the bikes battery,
- wait a minute to allow the bikes battery to gain a surface charge from the donor battery
- start the bike, then leave it running for a munute or two for bike battery to stabilise
- remove donor battery
If your donor battery is in another vehicle, it is best if you don't run the other vehicle. This is because your bike may have a shunt regulator, which will attempt to regulate the donor vehicles electrical system. It may cope for a short time, or it may just fail !
David must play fair with the other kids, even the idiots.
