Japanese Court rejects diplomatic immunity claim by embassy employee

Tokyo: The District Court sentenced a Japanese employee of the Sri Lankan Embassy to a 150,000 yen fine for causing a traffic accident, dismissing her claim of diplomatic immunity.

The defendant was convicted of hitting a motorcyclist, inflicting serious injuries on the man, while driving home after escorting a Sri Lankan cabinet minister to a hotel.

The judge said Japan has no law on diplomatic immunity where criminal proceedings are concerned.
