I know I have a habit of finding these “animal attacks biker” tales, but the reason for this attack – but the clear warning ‘don’t ride where deer bucks are when they’re on heat’ is one well worth pointing out! Bucks in rut get very defensive over their territory.
Californian biker Richard Starkweather wasn’t aware of this an aggravated buck charged his Harley Davidson. Starkweather was riding at about 40 mph when he noticed a buck standing on the side of the road. The buck took an aggressive stance, lowered its head and charged the bike. The buck hit Starkweather’s foot and jammed it underneath the outside of the engine under the motorcycle’s air cleaner, breaking Starkweather’s foot and breaking the deer’s neck. Despite the pain, Starkweather managed to keep the bike upright and park it safely.
CHiP Officer Matt Ramirez said “Motorcycle riders should always be aware. The deer here are in season, and they’re going out and doing their thing.”
