I've been pretty lucky there: I've been burgled twice (once the house, once the car). Both times the cops caught the miscreants responsible, and recovered all the gear from one burglary and most of it from the other. Well done, lads and ladies in blue.

Now, the way one of them got out of a stint in prison after a run of a dozen burglaries by waving her kid around stank to high heaven. You know what? Kid might be better off without mum raising it...

We have a BullMastiff, we've never been burgled with him. he will jump a 6 foot fence lol. best advice to any theives is to go elsewhere. 8-)

Like many, I waited until after it happened before installing an alarm. But I think a big, loud dog is also a good investment.

Alarms are good but often monitoring companies are slack. We often get calls from them to check out a house alarm thats been activated 45 minutes ago because they can't get to it. Why not call the police when the bloody thing goes off? Then they might have a chance of catching the wankers!

Dogs are good too, even stupid yappy ones can scare off a burglar. My personal preference is for large angry dogs that are capable of removing limbs.

On the contrary, the police place a very high priority on stopping volume crimes such as burglary. In areas outside of Auckland response times are generally very good and timely calls for assistance result in many arrests. The problem with Auckland is that staffing is always stretched to the limit and the level of crime is such that armed robbery is now a volume crime like burglary and theft from cars. The govt & police administration need to face up to the real issues in Auckland and resource appropriately.

The senario being burglar comes onto property gets justifiably savaged by fox terrier, or other similarly vicious dog. Can the owners be done? Or is there still some small level of common sense in this country.

Yeah that really sucks. At least what was stolen is replacable I guess. I love the fact that in NZ everyone actually gives a crap that something like this happened. Back in South Africa, this kinda thing is just an ordinary occurance.

we have been burgaled and unfortunately at the time had no insurance, we came home from 3 days camping at the beach with our 6 young kids to find the house ransacked, they took everything that wasn't tied down, the worst part was the locals all knew who had taken stuff but didn't want to nark, the local cop caught them in the act a week later and we got whatever they hadn't sold on or burnt back, they got off though cos they had over 25 convictions for burglary pending and 11 warrants out for their arrest. they got 2 months in jail for the previous burglaries and nothing for ours cos they "admitted" to the offence.
they even took the spuds in the cupboard, toilet paper, shampoo, and the kids clothes, unbelievable really. needless to say we now have deadbolts, security lights, security doors and an alarm, and most importantly insurance. I trust noone these days, you find things missing for years afterwards and feel really violated, it sucks, I agree the penalties are a giant pisstake, I would love to have a pet tiger roaming loose in the house next time! grrrr

Bad luck Spank.

We got broken into to last year but the cops caught him later on (he had about 30+ burgs to his name). He was only after jewellery and cash thankfully, of which there was none lying around.

My partner took it harder as she felt violated and was afraid to be alone in the house at night for a while.

I was just disappointed we didn't catch him in the act and give him a good hiding.

As for dogs, we have two - my boy has one of the loudest barks you have ever heard and if I encouraged him Im sure he would bite. He is a bull mastiff/pitbull/bull terrier/ridgeback cross but as he was brought up the right way has an excellent temperament and the burglar was comfortable around dogs so Im not surprised he wasn't mauled. He also broke in to the laundry where the dog biscuits are kept and the door was closed, so he had ample chance to make friends.

As far as the Dog Control Act goes, I wouldn't like to be in the situation where my dog bit someone on my property as you just never know. A man's house is his castle and so should be able to have a dog to defend it, but kids being kids often jump the fence to retrieve a ball - has happened to me but thankfully my boy just bailed the kid up against the fence.

BTW - best story I ever heard about dogs and burglars. A family was away and had a neighbour feeding their two dobermans. First morning both dogs came out (dog door) to be fed. First night only one came out and neighbour thought the other one must be inside sleeping or something. Second morning the other dog came out only. Second evening the first dog only came back out. Third morning and the other dog only came out. Neighbour thought pretty strange but both dogs were getting a feed so didn't worry about it.

When the family returned home - one dog came running out to greet them and they found the second dog inside the bedroom sitting attentatively outside the bedroom closet.

Inside the closet was a burglar who had been stranded for two or three days while the dogs took turns guarding him and feeding.

Hope it was true story -pretty incredible.
