    Potential new meeting place, Petone.

    Hey people.

Lyn and I sampled "The Jetty" on the Petone foreshore the other day.
    Great food...wines and beers....or simply a coffee.
It'd make a good spot for a meet. Most importantly it has an off road car park (for bikes of course!), but it has loads of seating and a brilliant view of the harbour from the deck.

    Just thought I'd mention it.

Is it "good" coffee or the normal swill that passes for coffee at most Petone Foreshore establishments?
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?

Have to be honest Jim, we didn't have a coffee...we were ravenous so we tucked in to grub and wine which was very good indeed. I can recommend the Martinborough "Stonecutter" Pinot Gris 2007.

If they're stocking Pinot Gris then that's a good sign that they may even have an espresso machine.

They can spell macchiato too, but they don't mention brand. I'll have to ring.

You're fast becoming the Egon Ronay of the Hutt, Jim! As opposed to the Egon Toast of course!

Well typically we slept in too late to be joining the TCSMR this morning but we did have time for a late lunch so thought we'd check out the Jetty Cafe remembering it had been mentioned on this good forum. It was our first time there as we hadn't been in that building since it was Oarsman Cabaret.

Its very Maranui Surf Clubesque with its view to the beach and beyond, but lo and behold it wasn't crowded. Menu is pretty good, wine list OK, but what a surprise they stock Foxton Fizz so I was obliged to partake of a couple of bottles of Creaming Soda - yum I like that taste.

Service was good - we both had fish mains - Mrs a terakihi dish and me a groper steak. I'm not a big fish eater so for me it was OK but not fabulous like a lamb rack. Dessert; Mrs had the blackboard special mousse while I had the chocolate brownie served warm with ice cream, cream, chocolate and orange caramel sauce.

So today was great weather, great company and great food - perhaps Wellington is OK after all if the wind stays died down.

Just thought you might be interested in some more feedback on this place.
    Cheers

    Merv

Lived in Petone 1955 to 1960, there wasn't any buildings on the wharf/jetty, let alone a cafe or restaurant!

(had a few shags in the lupins though )

How long has that been there? Progress huh! John.

John, they call it the Jetty but its the ancient two story building to the East of the Petone wharf - been there for years and its not on the wharf - I'm not sure of its origins its got all the old style timber trusses inside and back in the 80's I went there when it was a cabaret and the floor fair bounced making an engineer like me concerned it was going to collapse.

I guess it was some kind of port shed or boat shed in the very old days so surprisingly it does even predate someone your age .
    Cheers

There is a shortage of places in the Hutt and Petone to get a coffee late Sunday afternoons. This one is now on the list for the caffeine fix at the end of a day's ride.
    Here for the ride.

Y'know, living in Petone and Hutt Valley (as a teenager) in the fifties and owning a motorbike was really more like being a living Huckleberry Finn, as far as lifestyle goes.

They were probably some of the most carefree and happy years of my life, there were so few boundaries or rules! (we broke most of them anyway)

Such a terrific bunch of guys (and girls) to knock around with, I wonder how many of them are still around today.

Some of you might even be their kids or grandkids!

I guess we will never know. (Experiences nostalgic pang here). John.
