    Bandit Oil Changing

Just a few things I need to sort out before I go in guns blazing.

Need to change oil etc, but have no idea how much to put in. It has the 2300ml beside the cap so I imagine that's the amount needed?

Also with the bike on the centre stand I can expect the oil level to be flat enough for me to accuratley see it on the oil window?

If I'm changing the oil I supopose I'd better check the plugs to see if I need to replace them huh.

Worked for me on the GN125, just make sure you are on flat ground.

    1. 2300mil should be right. May be safest to fill to (say) 2100 or 2200 mils and check the level before adding the rest. 2300 mils probably includes the oil in your filter. If you're not changing your filter it's likely to take less than 2300 mils to fill her up. Usually best to change your filter every 2nd oil change or 10000km max.
    2. I would think so
    3. Well doesn't necessarily follow but it's a good idea to check your plugs from time to time (really depends on how long since you last changed your oil/checked your plugs). Say at 20000kms intervals at most although others may suggest shorter intervals

And use a decent motorcycle-specific oil (there are too many different opinions to risk putting a recommendation here but your owner's manual is a good starting point). FWIW I use Motul 5100 for my bikes (one oil/air cooled and one watercooled) but there are plenty of good oils out there depending on your budget etc

Not necessarily. That's the total oil volume.

If you are not changing the oil filter you will need to add less.

I would allow 250ml for the oil filter, add in say 2 litres, then check your oil level. Does the bike have one of those little windows on the side of the engine to see if the oil level is okay?

Better yet, get a new oil filter, drain all the oil, remove the oil filter, then add 2.2 litres, start it up, leave it to idle for a few minutes, turn it off, leave it for ten minutes, then check and top up if necessary. Make sure you don't rev it heaps when you start it up.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Yeah I'm going to get the good oil. I've only just got the bike so I might as well replace all the usual bits just so I know when it's been done etc.

    Cheers guys.

I realise it's probably pointing out the obvious, but you left out the step where you put the new oil filter back on before adding the new oil and starting the bike!

ANT do it this way and ya wont go wrong.
1 Loosen off the oil filter -Just take the initial fraction of a turn outwards.
Ya dont wanna take it off just haye it hand tight
    2) start the bike and leave idling for 5 minutes -Give her a couple of revs to about 3000
Turn off and remove the sump plug.
Go Inside and have a cupa tea
    retighten sump plug.
Loosen oil filter Housing off a few turns--Youll get another. gush of oil
    Tighten oil filter housing.
    Pour in 2.0l of oil.
Start bike leave running 30 seconds or so.
    Turn off -wait 5 minutes
Fill bike to JUST BELOW the full level.

Get professional advice. Mrs H's (Suzuki) Marauder has 1700 written by the filler cap. That's the amount of oil not including the filter. A full filter and oil change requires 2200.

Now when you say that do you mean take off the oil filter cap so I can actually see the filter? Or losen the cap bolts to hand movement level?

When I did it on the FXR I just undid the sump bolt & drained the oil, then with the sump bolt still off I removed the filter cover and replaced it. Then bolts back on and refill oil. Can't do the same?

Yeah, that's what I would have said too.

Please can you enlighten us Frosty? Is it to do with oil flow being faster out of the sump plug or something...

Yea Ant you have the idea -the whole idea/point is to dump as much dirty oil out as possible.
by loosening the filter off a bit (a fraction) -oil wont come out but it saves ya burning your fingers on hot parts when you do
Im pretty sure the bandito has a filter housing out the front of the motor -

Yeah I can see it all, and I don't even have to remove any fairings to undo the sump bolt!
