I feel posting about not wearing safety gear is wasted on this forum as most here are aware of the dangers. As I recall the original post asked us to try and educate the ignorant. Good way to get a bunch of fives I expect.

Today I helped with a meals on wheels run in Hamilton. As I was not driving I looked out for those on two wheels with a motor, in the course of the run I saw thirteen of them
Only one was in what we would describe as correct gear.
One motorcyclist had on shorts and jandals and no shirt.
Two had good jackets but NONE of twelve were wearing
gloves. There were six bikes and seven scooters.

I confiently assume that only one could have been a member or viewer of this forum.

    Are you a filthy commie?

The way I see it is ACC is a form of insurance so if something goes wrong you get patched up. Now I pay ACC levy's on my truck, bus, car and 2 motorcycles so I pay 5 levy's but can only claim on one at a time. So the way I see it I pay more than my share, so I'll look out for number one but I'll wear what I think is appropreate on the day.

If you are riding any sort of two wheeled bike , please dont wear T-Shirt.
    shorts and jandals.

Lately I have seen a lot of scooter riders (more than any others) wearing just that and riding in excess of 80kmph down the motorway. I even spotted one guy in barefeet.

Could all you people, please tell fellow riders about the effect of road vs skin and to wear sensible riding gear, even if it is hot.
This is a very serious message.

Maybe there should be a minimum standard dress code with cops handing out fines to those who will not listen.

Yeah.. maybe.. once all the burglars/taggers/muggers/rapists and thieves are all caught. Until then, I think the police have more important things to do than check out what we're wearing.
It'd be another dumb law that uses our money to get passed through parliament. And unless the protective clothing that some people think we should all wear has some sort of tag on it that the 'hard of thinking' can see easily, it's unenforceable.

    Fair enough Dave.

If a traffic cop sees someone riding down the motorway in a singlet, shorts, and jandals; I can't see what the big deal is about stopping them.

I don't think it will make a difference to their ability to catch the purpitrators of the other crimes you mention. I suppose someone won't get done for doing 5kph over the limit because the cop is busy stopping an inappropriately dressed biker.

Maybe the answer is that if no one is falling off and suffering excessive injury due to inadequate clothing, then such a law is not necessary.

I for one practice the long-lost art of Not Falling Off
