I have Topo maps. I am not sure whether these can be exported in a form usable to people without the necessary enabling software...

Try http://gm2tb.awokenmind.de/ if your GPS tool allows.
It's got all the calibration information contained with the tar file.

You can zoom right in, then export it to TrekBuddy format. I use it with Pocket GPS. You can go in as far as showing section boundaries. Or as far our as the North Island for example.

If you want to get into the tar file to pull the information out yourself - use a tool like 7Zip.

Topomaps is a series of jpgs that the software know how to locate. If you dont have the software you have to put the tiles together manually into one big file. Topos (260 series) don't have street names in urban areas so not a lot of use anyway.

If you have topomap (or whatever it is called now - maptoaster I think) and you gps will do serial output (or you get a usb serial adapter) the software will read the data from the serial port and locate you on the map.

Have a loop at the data on this web site. Its free auto routing software for NZ. It is intended that you use the software with Mapsource (Garmins PC to GPS interface software that does mapping). Have no idea if it is any use because dont have a GPS yet. If you have a Garmin GPS and have Mapsource then you'll be sweet with this (hopefully).

    Cheers R

P.S. just noticed the Legacy NZ Open GPS Maps section lower down on the page. They may be of some use if you cant use the main dataset.
