98 Yamaha R1 Front brake problem

Hi guys I have a 98 R1 which has a problem with the front brake. When I apply even pressure to the lever it feels grabby. At walking speed you sometimes have to apply quite a bit of pressure then it goes past the grabbing point and you come to an instant stop. At speed it is not noticable. Any ideas as to what may be the problem? I would rather go straight to it rather than mess around with things I don't have to. cheers

First try wiping the discs/ pads clean with Brakeclean. Sold at most Repco outlets. It will remove any possible greasy residue. (Oversprayed Bike Polish etc). Take it for a ride and see if there is a difference.
Is there any "Pulsing" feeling at the brake lever? If so, pop into your friendly local bike shop, and ask the service manager for his opinion.
Old brake fluid/brake lines, and pads can also give problems. Do the cheap, little things first.

Possibly old/warped discs. But they are expensive to replace, so start with the cheap things.
