rev counter reading double.

my track bikes rev counter reads double what it should (i.e actually doing 3000rpm, reads 6000rpm)
its a bit annoying seeing as how the bike revs out to 12 but the counter goes to 13. so when i get to 6.5k revs, the counter is just doing what ever it wants.

anyone know how i could fix it?
its a 1990 vfr750, but im not sure what the rev counter is from. i think it might be a cbr600 item.

it's obviously picking up twice the impulses that it needs.

shouldn't be too hard to figure out which wire needs to be read.

My old bike started doing that when the starter solenoid was on its way out. Pretty random...
