Drum Brake Shoes

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has a useful suggestion re sourcing woven type brake shoe lining suitable for old bikes. The commonly sold grey stuff from brake and clutch shops is intended for hydraulic car drums and is useless on a cable operated drum. In the old days ferodo sold green race linings (woven) which unfortunately used asbestos, so isnt pc anymore.

Interesting. When I got my shoes re-lined, it was so much better than the original worn-out factory crap that I didn't really think about this. It was greyish-black, and the shop did mostly truck brakes.

Surely the classic race guys would know. I wonder what sort of lining they're using in the (still produced) Japanese domestic market SR400s, which have a big vented TLS drum.

That would be great, two of my bikes run 8" drums up, one half width, the other full width.
I am certainly interested in whatever I can get.
Thankfully my existing woven linings on the full width hub are still servicable for this weekends classic racing at Pukekohe, but my road bike really needs some decent linings asap.

70km north of Auckland, I can get the drum shoe radius work done up here, am really after the linings. I can either send a pair of shoes down or can equally have the bonding/riveting done locally, but would like to finish them locally.
I agree the finishing work is the key, or they will be dross whatever the lining material.

Tell me where to send them and the shoes will be sent this week. Do appreciate it bud. I like stopping when I pull on the brake lever. Sourcing this stuff aint easy.

Interesting thread. I've had stuff lined many moons ago with the stickiest soft stuff they had (surprise it was grey) & it was rubbish. Now I know.

One day when I get to my T125 Stinger I will have to check where I'm at with linings & how good I can get the brakes. Just missed out on a complete set of NOS cables on Evilbay, but I don't want a Classic run around that has dangerous brakes.
