There was an interesting piece of technology that they actually implemented (I know in at least Japan and France). What you could/can do, is dial a number on your phone, then hold the phone up to whatever speaker was pumping out the tune you wanted to know about. It would then match the song's key features against a huge database (even with shitty cellphone quality), and send you a text message with the answer.

A bit limited, but I've often been in situations where I hear the song that I need to know in the middle of a television ad or film soundtrack or something, useful for that I suppose.

I heard this song I loved, I think it was in Cold Case, and found it was by a group called Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See. Great song, must try and track down the album it's on.

Try Limewire - download the free version. Or if you're worried about legality try Itunes - cause although I'm assured Limewire is legal, I do still wonder ....... anyway - great to be able to get just one song instead of the whole album.

Limewire is in no way, shape, or form legal, unless you own the copyright to material you are sharing.

Anyways, torrents are the way to go for music nowadays.

I like aMule (eMule, eDonkey2k etc). It's bloody slow, but it's got everything under the sun (yes, Grant Green's Idle Moments is there), in full album form (usually ZIPped or RARed), in lossless formats.

Limewire is legal. So is Bittorrent, and most any peer-to-peer software. What is not legal in most parts of the world is using said peer-to-peer software to download material you have no permission from the copyright holder for. Plenty of CC and other copyleft-licensed material out there you are free to download.
