yeop well its as devil said basicly
    Think motorbikes ok
The BMW r series are flat twins -one cylinder out each side --a flat 6 is same concept just 3 out each side.-flat
The V type engines be they V4/6/ or 8 are sorta like flat engines but the heads come up at an angle--V
Straight 4/6/8 is as devil said like a standard jap multi -l the cylinders in a row ,head sticking up (usually)
A straight 4 is usually in the east -west configeration and a 6 or 8 is usually north south.
Gwan now you car expirts -tell him about the estima with a flat 4 out the side and the masda cronos ........

For the benefit of those that are unfamiliar with using east/west in terms of engine position...

East - West or North - South is basically refering to the direction the crankshaft of the engine is pointing. By knowing if a (front engined) car is rear wheel drive or front wheel drive will give you a big clue as to which way the engine is facing.
A fwd car 95% of the time has an East - West layout, so all the gearbox/driveshafty bits are in the right place to drive the front wheels. In the rear wheel drive car, 95% of the time its North - South, again to line up with the gearbox and driveshaft.

When you get to referring to mid or rear engined cars it can really go either way.

Used to own a Nissan Skyline - Japanese manufacture, six cylinder rear wheel drive. Great car.

Reason I sold it - well Gummint likes to charge ACC in everything including motor registration and as I can't make use of 2 vehicles at the same time, it mean't that I was paying one lot of ACC for nothing.

But I do sometimes drive a 2001 Peugeot 306, a 1990 Peugeot 205 GTi, and a 1989 Subaru Vortex, though usually not at the same time.

I drive the Peugeots because they're excellent to drive, and because sometimes I need to, and the Subaru if I need to tow a trailer or the other cars are unavailable.

If I need to move summat big, I hire a truck, and if I'm skiing I hire a Prado, Exploder, or some other big ManhoodCompensatorThrustingPenisPushTheOtherVehicl esOffTheRoad vehicle.
Great collection. I've owned three Pugs - two 405's and a 605, and I reckon the Vortex is gonna become very collectable...

My shopping cart is a 1993 Toyota Corolla 1600 4-door.

Why? Because it's extremely unlikely to be stolen & it's got a really decent sized boot & Toyota's tend to be bullet proof.
